Three Peaks Challenge For Team DRFC PDF Print E-mail

A TEAM of intrepid Doncaster Rovers fans are all set to go to great heights for charity.
For a determined band of supporters and friends are preparing to scale Yorkshire's fearsome Three Peaks this summer - and what's more, they will be undertaking the challenge dressed in the famed red and white hoops.

The gruelling challenge will see the rambling Rovers trek a blister-inducing 23.5 miles and climbing a total of 2,153 metres in just 12 hours by taking on Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and finishing with the unforgiving Inglebrough in the Yorkshire Pennines.
And the team will be taking on the mammoth task in memory of team member Carl Harris' dad Ted who died in 2006 after a six month battle against stomach cancer.

The idea for the charity fund-raising trek came to fruition after fans began discussing the idea on social networking site Facebook - and quickly snowballed with a team of Rovers diehards signing up for the June 26 walk.

Making up the team along with Carl are fellow Rovers followers Darren Burke, Tracy Crowe, Phil Ellis, Mike Follows and Gary Long.
The team will be setting out from Horton-in-Ribblesdale at 8am for the marathon hike - hoping to finish the Three Peaks in under 12 hours. And each team member will be proudly wearing their replica Rovers shirt en route - showing off their support for Yorkshire's number one club.

Said Carl: "During his illness both my dad and our family found getting help and advice very difficult and the only organisation that we found were there, were the Macmillan cancer support team. I have been searching for an event I could take part in and complete in memory of my dad and where I can raise some money to support this wonderful organisation and hopefully give another sufferer or family a chance to recieve support that I know helped our family through a tough time."
A spokesman for Macmillan said: "The walk itself takes in some of the Yorkshire Dales’ finest scenery and will be a tremendous challenge for all who take part. We hope that walkers will collect sponsorship from friends, family and colleagues to help Macmillan improve the lives of people affected by cancer."

Result of the Sharpshooter fund PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 08 February 2010 16:09

Just a few lines to say many thanks to all our supporters who gave so generously to the Billy Sharp ‘Sharpshooter fund’.

It was a pity we could nt generate a lot of ‘on the pitch’ presence for the presentation of our  cheque on Saturday just before kick-off, but John Ryan had been asked to do several last minute interviews by SKY and by the BBC, and he was also playing ‘mine host’ to a lot of visitors...

As a result we lost the chance to announce the presentation via the PA system – and we had to dash across to the East Stand to wait for a chance when John & Stuart Highfield were free – but they both wanted to take part in the presentation as they really appreciate our efforts and are very grateful for all  that has been done  by the Rovers Supporters club  and the VSC.

Thanks to Paul Mayfield & Rob Clark who presented the cheque – no doubt you will see their pretty faces in the programme and on the VSC website very soon. They are available to do weddings & childrens  parties too.....

In the end we raised just short of £3000 – a very credible effort – its a pity Paypal take a lump in commission charges, but we rounded up the cheque to £3000.

We had a lot of folk contributing to the cause, and we will do a lucky draw for all who contributed – we will get a signed shirt by Billy for the lucky winner.

Steve Uttley is  organising the shirt and we will let you know who wins later...

Thanks again,

Cheers

Gareth

Ken Fear and Gareth Thomas were re-elected in their positions of secretary and chairman and Nathan Batchelor and Rob Clark were also elected to become members of the VSC board of directors.

John Ryan addressed the crowd and spent no time in putting a few things straight. He admitted to reading this forum and comparing it to the "Chester City forum" with some of the comments being made. Here's the main points that he made, and what he had to say:
