Interviews

Should applicants be judged mainly on how impressive they come across in the interview, or should more of an emphasis be put on the persons past achievements?

For me its the whole package...If the applicant interviews well but hasn't exactly set the world alight previously then he shouldn't be ruled out as this could be for a number of reason..injuries,budgets or in Redfearns case a nutcase of a owner...They should speak to respected people in the game who have worked under him, find out his strengths and weaknesses, his work ethic and man management skills...Then make a descision from there..It's okay having a high win percentage but if you managed the team with the highest budget that wont tell the whole story...

I would hope there's even more to it than that but I'd wager there isn't - get the shortlisted interviewees from applications, qualifications,  references, contacts and history. Then go watch the shortlisted folk do their stuff at their clubs for a training session with a familiar bunch of players then get em to cantley to demonstrate their qualities with our players, then ask a cross section of our players for their thoughts before getting the applicant round an interview table! Long and drawn out unfortunately but probably a great indicator of whether or not they really will cut the mustard!

The only problem with that is many managers aren't coaches they employ coaches to work for them who they trust

Is the appointment going to be definitely made before the Bradford game, me personally it needs to be done asap as at this moment in time were doomed.

Personally think it has to be done this week so the manager has a full week to train with the players ahead of the Bradford game, we have had plenty of time to make sure this happens.

It takes longer when you need someone to perform miracles of titanic proportions.

Is an in depth interview really that important?
If we have done our homework all that needs sorting is how much the new manager wants paying. We should be looking at the persons previous record. Unless of course we are prepared to take a gamble on an unknown entity.
If he is a total bas**rd but has a good win percentage get him employed now.

What about after the first round of interviews, inviting your leading candidates into the directors box for the next game. Let them watch the performance and then say "right your second interview is on Thursday tell us how you are going to turn this around and create a winning team?" Best answer wins the job

A bit like the candidates to lead the Labour Party, none of the names mentioned create much belief in a brighter future. But you never know there may be the equivalent of a hippy oap that may surprise a few before the inevitable fallout.
