I'm impressed with his movement and work rate  , but i've yet to be convinced that he will score more than 5 this season.

Convinced yet?
 ;)

Brilliant retort!! Lol

Williams 4 from 9 games and Marquis 4 from 8.  Carry that on for the season and you're looking at 25 each.  I'd be happy with 15-20 but the signs are good so far.
Been a long, long time since we had two up front who both looked a goal threat. Dutch or TRB will know: have we had two centre forwards both score 15+ in a season since Duggie and Ernie in 83/84?

Good call BST - that was the last pairing to score 15+ in a season. They scored 15 each in the League, and 17 each in all competitions. Glyn Snodin also scored 14 in all competitions that season, and Ian Snodin 10.

Nearest after that was in 1989-90 Dave Bruno Jones scored 15 and Lee Turnbull 14 in all competitions.

We have to go back to 1975-76 and Kitch and Brendan to find the last instance of two 20+ goalscorers in one season - something we have enjoyed only 5 times in our entire league history.

Dutch

Really? I'd assumed that there would have been a pairing to top Ernie and Duggie since then. That really was a gem of a season. Wasn't it about 15-16 times that we scored 3 goals? And we used to come out of the traps like greyhounds. Lost count of the number of times we were 2-0 up in the first 20 minutes and the game was put to bed.

Marquis and Williams are hardly a copy of Duggie and Ernie, but I've a feeling they may shape up to beat that record.

I make 14 in the league and one in the League Cup BST. Interestingly we only scored a fourth on one occasion.

That season was our third most successful in terms of points won (at 2 or 3 per win) after 1946-47 and 2003-04

That 4-0 at Northampton was the day the team coach broke down in the M1 and the squad had to get lifts from fans going to the match.

There was a picture in the following week's programme of Ernie thumbing a lift, with a haircut looking like a prototype for the Madchester scene.

He might have been playing since the days of the Great Pea Soupers, but he was still ahead of his time.

That was a great season.. I seem to remember regularly going 2 up early doors, then getting a third and seeing a game out..

How many did Warboys and Nimmo get each in 80/81?

I did say a few games back that Williams and Marquis looked as though they would make a good front pair and that they would be a good partnership.
Someone posted that i was watching a different game to them !!
looks like they were right.

They both work hard in different ways. Good pairing without doubt.

Nimmo 18 League plus 1 Cup. Warboys 6 League. By that stage in his career he didn't score many and sometimes played in defence.

My memory is deceiving me - I thought Warboys was still banging them in that year...

Marquis and Williams will both get plenty of goals this season i reckon but i can also see Copps having his best return.
In his new role he is getting more shots on goal.
His best league total for one season is just seven.
He might even get ten himself this time around.

That's not a bad shout, IMHO.  Blair, Rowe, McShefferey and hopefully Calder should all be able of bagging a few between them too.

I'm surprised Blundell and Leo weren't around the 15+ mark. It says something though about the anticipation amongst us with these two hunting the onion bag at a rate of knots.

Hope we don't tempt fate here but with these two working tandem, as said, our other players will profit and chip in with a few.

What's our record goal tally in a season?

Blundell got 20 in all competitions and LFW got 15 so both scored well in the 2003-04 season, along with McIndoe and Chris Brown also both getting into double figures! Just a shame we didn't sign Copps in the January that season as he would have been great in that side even at his tender years, in place of JJ Melligan.

Unfortunately Leo only scored 12 in 2003-4 (11 League, 1 League Cup) so he and Greg did not make 15 each that BST was asking about earlier. McIndoe and Brown scored 10 each and Paul Green had 8.

That's what makes a promotion winning team, imho, that the goals come from all over team. Yes, you have to have that 20 goal a season man in there but then you have to have the back-up of goals from midfield and even defence.

With the mix we have currently, the goals can come from quite a few not just the front 2, as IDM says, Blair, Rowe, Copps, McSheffrey (when he's back playing), Butler, the odd one from Calder (when he gets selected). My concern is that if either Williams or Marquis gets injured, it could harm our tally, but that could be improved in January.

With (hopefully) more players coming back from injury, the strength in depth of the squad increases significantly and we will have a strong bench to field at matches, which is always a massive bonus for us and a worry for opposition managers.

I reckon so, though Copps has rarely let his performances dip.

How many years did we tie Marquis down to?

Marquis has surprised me so far. I expected a pretty static targetman type who got a goal here and there. He is much more than that, a hard worker and technically good and a better finisher than i thought.
It shows that sometimes players need to be valued and have a permanent home, already he is a crowd favourite!.

Eh?

Give him a new contract and double his wages immediately. Will handle league one easily.

It's not a whoosh as I got that it was sarcastic. I was merely wondering who had suggested he wouldn't get more than 5 goals.
