Friday Quiz question
« on February 24, 2017, 12:54:58 pm by Dutch Uncle »
How many current Football League clubs can you name that have Rovers never played or never beaten in Football League Competition?

How many of these have Rovers beaten in other National Competitions?

I know Doncaster have never played Chelsea in a league game what so ever

The two teams have played each other in the facup

and then there was that pre season friendly at BV against chelsea in the late 1980s .

We've never beaten Wycombe Wanderers in any competition.

We've played Chelsea in the FA Cup and League Cup and lost both times.

All correct so far:

Chelsea, AFC Wimbledon never played in FL

Wycombe - never beaten in any national competition

More to come in both categories

So at what point do we class them as a bogey team ?

Hope this issue is fixed at the league game in the wycombe neck of
the woods that's comming this season.

IMHO we have a long way to go before they overtake Reading as our bogey team. On the other hand te Yeovil jinx seems to have been mitigated

Newcastle United

Correct - our League record against Newcastle reads W0, D1, L7

Never played in FL: Chelsea, AFC Wimbledon

Never beaten in FL: Wycombe, Newcastle

Still more to get in both categories

Edit: My mistake, the never played list is complete

Reading > > > 4got all about that set of barstewards .

Recall going their when they pissed the division we was in back then ,could have been div3 .

Sure it was a re arranged game at their old ground elm park.

A shit load of Portsmouth lads turned supporting rovers that day for sole reason during a game that season somewhere on the south coast
the rovers goal keeper had a brilliant game as a handfull of Portsmouth lads went to the game.sure it was a mid week fixture.

A certain Portsmouth lad was so impressed with the goal keeer of rovers display that night ,that he got onto the rovers team coach shouting * ** * for England.

I can't recall who the keeper was,but the Portsmouth lads promised rovers players on the team coach that they would come back and watch Doncaster again.

Turned out about 20 of them were at the reading game on strength of above .

Arsenal and Everton, have we ever played either of them in the league? They've both been top flight for donkeys years so my expectation is that we haven't, though I know we've played them both in cups.

Apologies - Chelsea and AFC Wimbledon are actually the only current League clubs we have never played in FL competition. I just noticed we played Arsenal in 1901-2 and 1902-3 (including one win), so this category is completed. We also have 2 league victories over Everton in the early 1950's.

I reckon there are still 2 or 3 more we have never beaten in the FL.

Burton, have we beaten them in the football league?? Two draws last season but I think they were the first league games between us, although we did win in the FL trophy a couple of seasons ago at their place..

Is it buxton utd  and Boston utd ?

Sure we have played both these in the league and I know one of them in the facup but I get the two teams mixed up all the time as I went to the facup game I think.

Correct. Those are the only 2 occasions we have played Sunderland in the League. We did have a famous victory over them in the FA Cup in 1953-54

So never beaten in the League:

Newcastle
Sunderland (Have FA Cup win)
Wycombe
Burton (Have Trophy and Conference wins)

The only other possibility, and the reason for posting this now, is Accrington Stanley.

It depends whether a Phoenix club is deemed to be the same club, and carry forward its history. I believe AFC Wimbledon does not carry the old Wimbledon's history (at least the Sky Annual does not recognise it), although I am sure that is highly contentious. Certainly MK Dons do not carry that history, either it is with AFC WImbledon or no-one. On the other hand The Sky Annual does give Newport and Accrington Stanley credit for old history and records, so maybe we do have victories against Stanley from way back  - 20 to be precise. Let's hope that is a moot point after tomorrow.  :scarf:

The interesting thing is that we have never played either Rushden & Diamonds or Dagenham & Redbridge in a Football League match - only Conference (and FA Cup for R&D)

No AFC Wimbledon are no more a continuation of the original Wimbledon either, as they formed a year before the original side closed down and Mk Dons were allowed to reform and take their (franchise) place in the league.

But morally AFCW hold the higher ground..

Anyway, never mind that!

Our record against Bolton in FL matches is W3, D1, L4

I well remember in, Dave Cusack's era, two 3-0 wins at OBV in 1986-7 over Christmas when we beat Bolton and Rotherham both 3-0 in a couple of days - the Rotherham match being the one where Tommy Gaynor scored his wonder goal. I think those 6 goals must account for most of Rovers goals scored at OBV in Cusack's entire reign as manager.

Looks like you forgot about the match when we beat them 7-5 too.

But then it appears that football for you was never about what happens on the pitch, I've never seen you once talk about it..!
