Ex Rover

Remember Mar de Val? Ex Real Madrid player signed by P Diddy.

Turns out for a Spanish 4th division side.

Seemed a decent prospect at the time. Obviously didn't meet his potential.

Greatest memory of him was when he was on his knees, arms in the air at glanford park when we scored.
Just never settled in England.

He could play a bit I though. Very reckless though, possibly due to a lack of pace.

Shame really. Never really got going after a fairly nasty injury preseason.

Looked good in that friendly until he got injured. A real shame that. Obviously his spell in England did more harm than good.

I remember our 1-0 defeat at Blackburn,McCullough got alot of blame and criticism that game, but I believe it was mostly De Val at fault. He kept going out of position, and was far too slow, neshing tackles(surpringly with his card count)hence failing to cover, leaving too much space behind McCullough, when he went forward. Our defence was great that day,and if it was'nt for Robinson having a blinder,we would have got point/points from that game.

De Val is playing for TERRASSA FC now in the Third Division and lives on his native Costa Brava and seems very happy with life . He still follows Rovers and in his own words is glad to see us back where we belong (but I didn't take that to mean he thinks we are not a Championship club !! lol.)

I thought his best attribute was his passing. What little we got to see of him one of best passers I've seen in a Rovers shirt.  Would have worked at League 1 and championship but only if you played him as a 'Quaterback' Beckham (towards end of career)/Pirlo role. You would need a very good tackling midfielder alongside him. You'd have to build a team around him, which would have been a very big call.

Never worked out for him but bet it must be difficult moving to a different country to play and then playing for a clueless manager cant have helped.
