1)Which signing has excited you the most
Mine must be king Alick when he first came back and played in front of a large crowd in a reserve match.
2)Which has been the biggest disapointment
     Carl Alford
3)biggest surprise
   McIndoe
4)Looked absolute quality
Chris Nichol, Wellens,Stock,a bit greedy there.
5)Wish they were still young and playing for us
     Darren Moore
6)Best value for money paid
      Coppinger

Think this is a great idea for a thread Selby, and you have some great choices.

I am setting myself the rule (others may or may not wish to follow) that I am not allowed to reuse any of your players (although number 6 really has no realistic challenger):

1)Which signing has excited you the most
    Laurie Sheffield
2)Which has been the biggest disapointment
Many candidates - I will go for Justin Jackson over Tommy Tynan because we paid so much for JJ
3)biggest surprise
if you mean surprised he signed for us - Billy Sharp
if you mean surprised us how good he was - Chris Swailes
4)Looked absolute quality
   Neil Sullivan
5)Wish they were still young and playing for us
     Peter Kitchen
6)Best value for money paid
Matt Mills (because of how much we sold him for), just over Greg Blundell

Great thread idea! Bear in mind I've only been going for 20 years, so all of my selections will be post-relegation out of the league.

1) Which signing has excited you the most

Billy Sharp - was well chuffed when he signed him on deadline day, and he never disappointed.

2) Which has been the biggest disapointment

Gordon Greer - tricky one this, I've gone for someone who clearly had the ability and with hindsight, we know he could've been great for us. Injuries wrecked his time here but he just never seemed to fit in, but it was apparent he was talented and he proved it after leaving us. I was really looking forward to seeing him in our defence when we signed him.

3) biggest surprise

I'm going to echo JJ Price - we knew he had something about him, and he'd put us to the sword at Hull that time, but I don't think many would have predicted the impact he had. The very definition of a cult hero at the Rovers, always smile when I see him or relive his glories in the hoops. Honourable mention for Mark McCammon, who played a big part in our promotion from L1 despite not being one of the first names you think of from that side, and of course slammed in the first ever goal at the Keepmoat.

4) Looked absolute quality

There's been a few who I've looked at and thought "they won't be here for long". Jason Shackell was brilliant, as was Jay Emmanuel-Thomas. I really thought JET would play for England based on his ability alone.

5) Wish they were still young and playing for us

We're crying out for a prime age Ritchie Wellens now in the middle of the park. I'd also love to get Neil Sullivan back at age 30, I think we really took for granted how much he brought to our team and club.

6) Best value for money paid

It really has to be James Coppinger, doesn't it? What did we pay, 30k or something for him to be here for 13 years (and counting), show such pure class and professionalism all that time, and play a pivotal role in our JPT win, promotion at Wembley, League One title, and promotion this year.

Billy Sharp

A toss up between Alford and Justin Jackson

Steve Nicol and I'm going to add George Friend.

Darren Moore is an excellent call by others.

Copps has got to me the best value for money player ever to pull on a Rovers shirt.

I am going to mention some special  players who over the years have given me great pleasure watching.
  from my youth,
Bert Tindall,Len Graham,John Mooney,Alfie Hale,Collin Booth,Wylie and Rickets(a great half back pairing)
  Later years
Warboys, the Snodin brothers(probably the best home grown players since Alick)Miller, Redfearn, Curran, big Bren,Elwiss(a great player)Kitchen.
All the players who got us promotion from the Conference (team work and effort every game)
Ditto the first league season team and the other promotion sides.
And Lee Warren services above the call of duty.
There are lots of better supported teams in this country, but none could have given me more pleasure than the Rovers have to me.
My apologies to the many players I have failed to mention, who have played their part in my pleasure, and thanks to the friends I have met at the Rovers, and dad who was also a lifelong supporter, its been great.

Lee Warren. Thanks for the reminder Selby. He was a man who went above and beyond. Top, top bloke. Wonder what he's doing now? Wiki doesn't say much.

Well said Brian.
A lot isn't said about the friendships you make following Donny Rovers, both home and away. These people can shape shape you as a person, if they get you early enough.
Selby ( Bri) was the first person to take me to any away match ( Hartlepool) somewhere around 76/77 and the first time I'd seen a woman with Hartlepool Fc tattoos. They look after you ( not the woman) and guide you in ways of how to act away from home. You can watch a game through their eyes and experience their knowledge.
Move on 40 years and I'm still sat near the old bounder. Opinionated he certainly is, caring (in his own way ) and his love for the greatest little team anywhere remains immense. You keep going you gobby old so and so.

1)Which signing has excited you the most

Michael McIndoe. Couldn't believe my eyes when I read that we were in with a chance of signing him. A huge coup for us to get him after an incredible season for Yeovil and he lived up to the hype. Richie Wellens too - arrived in similar circumstances as one of the best and most influential players at that level, I was amazed when we got him.

2)Which has been the biggest disapointment

Lots to choose from. Alford and Jackson relative to the investment in them at the time. Or I could nominate any and every signing brought in by Willie McKay. That whole thing was disappointing.

3)Biggest surprise

Possibly John Oster. I thought when he arrived that he'd probably just toss it off towards the end of his career but he was absolutely brilliant to watch through all his time here. Top footballer. Honorary mention to Ian Duerden - don't think many people expected much when he joined but he was class.

4)Looked absolute quality

We've been blessed with so many. Players worth a mention that instantly stood out as special (and that aren't already listed by others) include Danny Willamson, Colin Cramb and Ryan Mason.

5)Wish they were still young and playing for us

Echo the original post - a prime Darren Moore would sort out our defensive frailties. And a prime Brian Stock - probably the best midfielder I've ever seen play for us.

6)Best value for money paid

It has to be James Coppinger. Colin Cramb was also a bargain at £50k - he was two steps ahead of anyone at that level and so far ahead of anyone else we had at the time.

I'll add a question 7 too:

Cult hero

So, not necessarily the best player but just someone you loved having at our club. Gives me the chance to mention:

Gary Brabin (what a character)
Gregg Blundell (loved how proud he was to wear our shirt)
And, for his short but endearingly aggressive spell at the club, Colin Sutherland. I bet Colin West won't forget him!

1)Which signing has excited you the most
Billy Sharp all three times, or Tommy Rowe. Diouf had me wetting myself as well.
2)Which has been the biggest disapointment
Billy Sharp on his second return. :(
3)biggest surprise
Matty Blair. Didn't think he'd add anything, turned out to be one of my favourite players.
4)Looked absolute quality
So many I could've said, some of which have already been mentioned, so with that in mind I'll go for a less obvious choice and say James O'Connor.
5)Wish they were still young and playing for us
Bit of a cheat with this one but Gary McSheffrey - would've loved to have seen him here in his prime.
6)Best value for money paid
     James Coppinger without a doubt.

over the years there as been many players that fit the criteria so without going too far back i will go for these.     1)exciting signings-- BILLY SHARP on his return-                                                                                             2)biggest disappointment.- AFTER HIS RETURN---BILLY SHARP.                                                                                                      3)biggest surprise-- WILCOCKSON,RABJOHN,CLISH.                                                                                                  4)quality---TERRY CURREN,TONY COLEMAN;                                                                                                             5)still young enough-- ALICK JEFFREY as a 16/17 year old.                                                                                       6)COPPS the obvious choice but again would incude,RABJOHN,WILCOCKSON CLISH.

1)Which signing has excited you the most

Couldn't believe we signed tommy Rowe in league 2. Also was pretty excited when we signed macheda first time around.

2)Which has been the biggest disapointment
Most of willie mckays premier league rejects we brought in.

3)biggest surprise
Rob jones, didn't think he would have the impact he did in our promotion season.

4)Looked absolute quality
Sam jonhnston, still think this lad is good enough to play in the premier league.
5)Wish they were still young and playing for us
Either stock or wellens. I would love one of these two in our team now.
6)Best value for money paid
     James Coppinger without a doubt.

Another one I forgot, Jason Price,I always thought of him as an entertainer,I even enjoyed his kick abouts before the game started.
Albert Broadbent (old Yogie) also had the connection with the crowd and put a smile on peoples faces.
