Squad starting to take shape:

Lawlor/Marosi

Blair/Alcock

Baudry/Butler/Wright/ANOther

Andrew/Garrett?

Copps/Mason/Rowe/McCullough/Whiteman/ANOther/??

Marquis?/Mandeville/May/ANOther

Assuming DF gets his 3 Premier League loanees, I think there's still room for another midfield player.

Think there was two strikers to come in. One permanent, one on loan.

I'd like to see a winger come in think Rowe is wasted out on the flank even though he is quality with the look at the potential midfield options they do pretty much a centre midfield role

Houghton won't be ready before the window shuts if he's coming it would be January

I think it will depend how close he is loan first to get him up to speed between end August and January then permanent deal.

If he's miles away in August then you may be right.

Question is - what's he like right now?

IF his recovery has gone to plan, then he should be ok by August, if he's lucky, but if he gets any setbacks, that will delay things and he may as well get the best treatment possible and that will be at Chelsea. I would like to think that he becomes a Doncaster player, but I can't see us planning for that being the start of the season. Fingers crossed for the lad and for us becoming part of his future.

There is no doubt in my mind that he would be a serious capture for us and give us a better chance of further progress, which is what we all want.

DF said he can't consider him until January. Is it worth taking a gamble on a loan before the window closes? As he'll have little time to prove his fitness, I guess it's too big a gamble, not even considering whether Chelsea will let him go if he's not ready.

I wish things were different as he was pivotal to our success.

Houghton is back 'running on the grass' as the stage of recovery is called and as he tweeted last week.

 Jordan Houghton‏Verified account @HOUGHTON_J May 27

Boots are back out, running on the grass! All i need now is a @chelseafc win later on👌🏼 what a day😁

Strike force looks very lightweight,  John has a.huge burden on his shoulders at present.    Liam is still untested after the injuries and young alfie is a work in progress, deffo not a first choice L1 striker at present. I think a big experienced Chris Brown type would be ideal for Johnny to play off....

But he is right is he not. Now a younger 23 year old loanee with pace and strength may be the answer. Then if Andy Williams leaves we may bring in another permanent striker to bolster the attack

Marquis is a similar kind of player to Brown. Likes his back to goal. You wouldn't play them together.

We need pace not a Chris Brown type, Marquis ticks that box.

yes he is right that's what I meant I was not keen on him the last time he was here, he stifled the rest of the forward and midfielders

Strange that they waited three weeks to formally announce it, especially as a Chris Wilder had already done so.

Good signing though and a big welcome to the lad.

The midfield is now starting to get better,

Last year we has McCollough, Keegan, Middleton, Calder, Rowe, Coppinger and Houghton can add to that versatile Mason Blair and McSheffrey.

Long term injuries to McCollough and McSheffrey ruled them out plus injury prone Keegan.

This up coming season we have McCollough, Rowe, Coppinger, Whiteman.
We can add to that the versatile Mason, Blair and Kiwomya. So add Houghton and another it should be better.

A midfield combining of

Coppinger/Houghton 🤞/Whiteman/Rowe

Is going to be lethal in this division.

What worries me is not in their half it's in our half where we are light - we need a brut of a centre half, a no nonsense - ball winner & a good header of the ball

Good signing though and a big welcome to the lad.

I've noticed, some pre-seasons,the club seem to hold 1(signing) back and if a deal/target or 2 falls through,Or a player leaves that most fans would be sad to see leave, they wheel it out will anticipated announcement, even though most fans have heard it already.Probably hoping to try and keep fans glasses half full.Off the top of my head,as far back as when John Spicer signed,I remember it was wheel out(even though it was already known) just after it was confirmed Greeny was leaving.

The goals he scored for Mansfield last season would suggest that he won't mess about when it comes to having a dig from outside of the box.

This lad will do well for us he gets box to box and apart from being a good midfielder likes to have a go from distance. I think he will develop and fit in well with the way we play our football. :rtid:

Make no mistake this lad is a very very highly rated player, was brilliant for Mansfield last season and Wilder has big plans for him...6 months is probably all we will get though.I get the impression a few people are underwhelmed by this signing but they are going to be surprised at his quality...

Asked on a Facebook group about him and these were the replies;
- Yes. He's class
- Attacking midfield very good player
- Central playmaker and can score. He was the most naturally gifted player in our team last season. He was a bit light on the ball and inexperienced, but a really exciting prospect. He's definitely ready for league 1 and should do really well for you. I wish him all the best.
- Very good player....
- Yes good player
- Got yourself a good un there.
- Brill player gutted we couldn't get him for another season tbh :-(
- Scores goals & creates a lot of chances. Very good signing

Looks like we've signed a very useful player! He will want to impress so can see him putting in 110%. Not long until we see him in action.
