Player nicknames
« on August 04, 2017, 04:42:19 pm by pafcprogs »
Greetings again

New season new optimism.  New teams to ponder

I am however after some donny history

What are the best, most original player nicknames for Rovers players or managers and how did they originate

Best for league one and I'd love to be in the same position as we both were last year..or better still both one higher

Peter

I think the " Dennis" goalkeeper thing came from Belle Vue when it was shouted mainly by Bill (Santa) , Paul ( who has sadly passed away ) and Stuart ( who still makes the occasional comment !!! from the back of the West stand ). I listened to their banter for at least 15 years from one terrace step in front. Any one from the other side of the Trent was a " Southern Jesse ".
If we were playing a team from the other side of London or a coastal team they were classed as  French.
Lancashire teams were hated because they were from Lancashire
Carlisle,Darlo,Hartlepool were classed as Scottish
Welsh teams were always suspect because they were Welsh
Barnsley and Rotherham were always laughed at once none of their interbred fans had snook on the terracing close by. It was easy to tell because in the winter time their gloves always had an extra finger or two.
The advent of names on shirts was one of funniest things ever, especially in the conference on a night match, the full backs / wingers used to get some right grief

Correct Stockton. One of his team mates of 66 told me he would never pass the ball unless forced to.

The Hoff - the only other Dutchman to play for us - when we didn't know his name when he was a pre-season trial list for us.

Dave.

Seemingly any foreign player, for reasons that aren't apparent to me.

Are you really saying that the nickname dave given to RODNEY Mongola isn't obvious as to why?   Lol

So what was the reason behind Dany N'Guessan being slapped with the "Dave" tag? "Lol".

I'm not trying to make some "PC" point before people decide to wade in and make out that's why I have an issue with it - I don't have an issue with it, I just don't really get where it's come from.

And even so, it's a slightly tenuous link to the name Dave...

Pot noodle advert from years ago.

If I remember right it came from this originally about Darren Moore when he was at west Brom. Football fans being original picked it up for any large black player.

I remember when I first started watching Rovers some fans called Charlie Williams "stag". Probably because of his running I suppose.

I'm 100% sure the dave tag given to rodney was because of only fools and horses, no other reason.  I'm not aware of any other dave nicknames.   I'm 1000% sure it's  not some subtle racist thing either...its just a bit of banter..

...well I wasn't trying to insinuate that there were racist undertones, you've just decided I was. I know it's from only fools and horses, but it's a bit tenuous. Not sure how you can link N'Guessan to that, however...

I like the Only Fools comparison for Kongolo, it's amusing and somewhat witty.

The only similarly nicknamed *foreign* player I can think of is Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta, christened Dave by fans due to his complex surname. "We'll just call you Dave, we'll just call you Dave... Azpilicueta, we'll just call you Dave".
