So what was the reason behind Dany N'Guessan being slapped with the "Dave" tag? "Lol".

I'm not trying to make some "PC" point before people decide to wade in and make out that's why I have an issue with it - I don't have an issue with it, I just don't really get where it's come from.

And even so, it's a slightly tenuous link to the name Dave...

I'm 100% sure the dave tag given to rodney was because of only fools and horses, no other reason.  I'm not aware of any other dave nicknames.   I'm 1000% sure it's  not some subtle racist thing either...its just a bit of banter..

...well I wasn't trying to insinuate that there were racist undertones, you've just decided I was. I know it's from only fools and horses, but it's a bit tenuous. Not sure how you can link N'Guessan to that, however...

I disagree, the second you say you are not trying to be PC strongly suggests that you believe there was some non PC thing going on, Danny was black they called him dave,  Rodney is black they call him dave as well. Absolute bollox, it's not a tenuous link, it's the most obvious nickname any player has ever had that didn't include shortening his actual name. It's people like you that encourage the pc nanny state bollox.  Trying to find rascist links when non exist, you should be ashamed of yourself.

The thing is I don't remember Alick ever being called that while he was still playing. As far as I recall that epithet was given to him later, and if so then is it really a nickname? Just pedantry of course, and he us undeniably the King.

GR, I only saw him after his comeback in 1963. Did fans chant that in his first spell, or did I just miss the whole chant?

Not one of ours, but Dave Carroll of Wycombe (about 25 years ago) was known as "Jesus" as he was tall and thin with long wavy hair..

For us, Animal was my favourite in terms of nicknames, but I could get used to "Dave" for Rodney - and that is only due to only fools and horses..

If he gives a penalty away we can call him a plonker 😀

King Alick.
Thanks Chris, glad someone remembered him.

I knew who you was referring to it was tongue in cheek based on age difference, I didn't see him play not my era, I'm sure Robs comment was the same.

I like the Only Fools comparison for Kongolo, it's amusing and somewhat witty.

The only similarly nicknamed *foreign* player I can think of is Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta, christened Dave by fans due to his complex surname. "We'll just call you Dave, we'll just call you Dave... Azpilicueta, we'll just call you Dave".

The funniest i remember was for Kiki Musampa at Man City.
After his first training session he asked the lads why they kept calling him Chris instead of Kiki !!

Thanks for these...some good ones in there

BTW you will be delighted to know that apparently the St Lukes Bowl match we played in midweek counts as a first team match so we get Carey back a game early...

Score first and you'll probably win though :0
