My  opinion of then holding midfield position is that it is one of the easiest positions to play in a good team, especially if a team has a good midfield, and centre halves.
I know people will say I am over simplifying it,but the centre halves should cover the through ball behind you,and the midfielders who can play, carry the ball forward for you,the best players in this position read the game well, break up play, and give the ball to the more gifted players in midfield.Just like an old fashioned sweeper only in front of,and not behind the back defenders.
Its an important position, but you can look good if the other players play well around you, without actually effecting the game a lot.
As has been said on other postings Houghton,Whiteman,McColough, and Mason have not looked as good a players when used as midfielders, or defenders,I am not getting at them, I just think it is an easier position to play.

It is the easiest you're right.

Chelsea will see us as a great vehicle for his development. He knows the set up, the other players, the fans, and the style of play. He can really go up to the next level with us and they will see that as very valuable.

Chelsea will only be interested in the transfer fee they get for him, I doubt he'll get another contract extension and they will be looking to cash in on their asset in the January window!

I suspect you are right Johnny, however a good spell with us will see his value peak.

Paul Goodwin: "Darren Ferguson says the deal for Jordan Houghton is now done. He'll link up with #drfc mid-September."

I agree that Chelsea will want to offload..Reality is if they thought he had first team potential they would be expecting him to be playing higher than league 1 by now...
I would have tried to agree a deal now tbh rather than loan....If he does well in this league and becomes available in January we will have much more competition...
The two lads we have on loan now in Midfield are quality but we haven't a cat in hells chance of signing either of them long term

I have to say that this is a good deal. If anyone really thinks that Houghton won't get in the team they have very short memories.  Last year he was the backbone of the team.  Look how it all went to rat sxxx when he got injured. We've looked ok this season but not good enough to get a player of his quality to warm the bench.  The player that should be worried is baudrey. Joe wright is playing well enough to keep him out

Hopefully we've got the money still from the agreed Grant deal and the Arsenal money to make a bid for him.

I reckon he's up for grabs....300-400k maybe?

Will the club allow DF spend now on a central defender inspite of his denials of needing one .

Brilliant news, fingers crossed we don't have a injury prone season and I can see us really challenging for promotion.

Just been on the radio that his move here will be another season long loan.

Would think that'd put us in pole position to sign him at the end of his contract then. Probably negotiate a fee towards the end of the season (if one isn't included in the loan as a clause anyway) rather than prat about with a tribunal.

I didn't say otherwise Mush, just that it was a loan for now.
Hopefully you will be right.

The deal is done before 31st August then he can join anytime he is ready after that.
