https://www.theguardian.com/football/2017/oct/11/chris-kirkland-depression-interview

The above is a link to an interview with Chris Kirkland about the depression he's gone through, well worth a read and I thought notable when discussing his injury record considering his ill-fated stint at the Rovers a few seasons ago.

Also thought it was crap that Liverpool gave his Champions League medal to someone else and left him and his wife in Istanbul afterwards!

Terrible that from Liverpool.

Good on him for coming out and speaking about it. Wish him all the best.

Hopefully this will encourage more players to open up. It’s interesting how affected goalkeepers seem to be. I can name 4 off the top of my head

Chris Kirkland
Tony Coton
Craig King
Robert Enke

I'd be interested to read more like this.

It must be tough being a keeper (aside from the pay packet of course..) as if you're not no. 1 you're basically not needed at all, barring emergency, whereas most if not all other players can at least do a job in a different position or can get a chance if there's a shift in formation etc.

BBC now has a slightly more in-depth interview with Kirkland up on their website, same ground covered but with more details. He mentions how fellow Rovers goalkeeping alum Andy Rhodes made a big difference to him when he was struggling with anxiety when playing for Wednesday:
