A bit of fun
« on February 08, 2018, 10:19:52 am by selby »
I thought it would be good to ask people, what team would you pick out of all players you have actually seen play live in a game? Mine is unashamedly based on players I saw when younger, and I suppose more impressionable but her goes.
                             Yashin
          Santos    Charles     Beckenbauer  Maldini

   Mathews     McKay        Cruyff         Koskis

                Di Stefano    Puskas

Subs   Johnson , Greaves, Murdoch, Wilson, Charlton, Charlton, Banks

Really hard this one..

I saw quite a few of the late 80's "stars" in this country - Lineker, Barnes, Beardsley etc.  Racked my brains to remember if I ever saw George Best towards the end of his career, did he ever play at BV?

World class players?  I did see "the Hound" aka Andrea Pirlo play in New York, but how to choose between him and Billy Bremner in midfield?

Unfortunately the only ones of those I saw play live were Beckenbauer, Banks and Bobby Charlton. I did see George Best and he would definitely be in my team.

R.B. how could I forget Best? but there have been so many,Rocha of Uruguay, Didi Brazil, Kopa France, I have been lucky to see some great players. Even Alick, Duncan Edwards, who given an even break in life would have been talked of as greats of the game no doubt.
Players like Coppinger, Stock, Wellens, and many more Rovers players who have given me great pleasure over the years. I consider myself very lucky.

Lloris
Walker - Pique - Terry - A.Cole
Coutinho - Gerrard - De Bruyne
Coppinger - Zlatan - Sterling

Subs: Sullivan, Vertonghen, Ferdinand, David Silva, Sanchez, Kane, Lukaku

With the caveat that I was born in 1996. I'm jealous of some of the names that have been mentioned here though.

EDIT: this is players I've physically seen play football in a stadium. My lifetime team would be:
Buffon
Lahm - Puyol - Maldini - Roberto Carlos
Xavi - De Bruyne - Iniesta
C. Ronaldo - Ronaldo - Messi

SUBS: Casillas, Cannavaro, Ramos, Coppinger, Ronaldinho, Zidane, Henry

In the same boat as swintonrover, I wasn't around to see some of the greats already listed on here. I'd go for:

David de Gea
Carles PuyolRio FerdinandHarry Worley John Terry
XaviAndres Iniesta
Philippe CoutinhoKevin De BruyneRonaldinho
Thierry HenryLionel Messi

Subs:
Hugo Lloris
Vincent Kompany
Ashley Cole
Steven Gerrard
Xabi Alonso
David Beckham
Sergio Aguero

Potentially too attacking minded, but I'm sure the 3 rocks at the back would cope (if the opposition could even get the ball!)

It would be Sandor Kocsis who was as you will know one of the Hungarian Team who beat us at Wembley for the first time. Think he hay have done that outrageous ball drag back for one of the goals ...

... and Rod Johnson (Doncaster Rovers) of course  :scarf: but more likely Jimmy Johnstone (Celtic Right Winger) ?

At their prime, I would have the De Boer brothers in any team, admittedly I only saw the play against Wales (Hughes, Speed, Southall team al - no Giggs btw) but I’ve never seen two players dominate a match so effortlessly. Rest of the team not too shabby either mind. Wales lost 1-3 which didn’t reflect the balalance. Return leg was 7-1 with a Bergkamp hat trick

Best played at Belle Vue for a representative 11 against Liverpool in John Nicholson's testimonial game.

I saw George Best play for Northern Ireland v Spain at Hull in 1972. They had to play their games in England at the time  (the height of The Troubles). It was played on a midweek afternoon due to power restrictions. It was during the half term holidays.

I saw Best play for N. Ireland against England at Wembley in April 1970, Bobby Charlton's 100th cap.
Best was brilliant, in quite a poor N. Ireland side. He scored their consolation in a 3-1 win for England.

Gordon Banks in one goal, Pat Jennings in the other!

Bobby Moore, Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst also played for England that night.

Sorry Paul, a senior moment with the spelling Kocsis played for the great Hungarian side, I am pretty sure he Holds the record average goals per game in  international games in front Muller.
The other was Jimmy Johnstone of Celtic simply because he ripped Leeds apart and became my hero for life. a very underestimated side that Celtic side, they changed European football beating the very defensive Italians, when most teams in the world were trying to go defensive, as Independiente in South America, and Milan were winning the big trophies.

No doubt it's a great team Selby.  Surely Kocsis should be up front with Cruyff on the left and Di Steffano dropping back into attacking midfield (Sort of playing the role hidejkuti did for the classic Hungary team and Charlton did in '66 (IR - Kocsis CF/AM - Di Stefano IL - Puskas, in old money)) very versatile though.
