Signing a proven Championship player like Tommy Rowe I would think still shows the ambition the club has along with Whiteman and managing to get Marquis signed on a longer term deal despite interest from other clubs.

Wellens was (just about) the best player in L1 when we signed him. They will have been on good money as well. They definitely weren’t unknowns.

Wellens and Hayter were absolutely big signings, Roberts was very well known too. Before them, Heffernan and JJ Price were definitely very well regarded forwards for this level, not unknowns. I think the other Bournemouth lads weren't so well known but neither was Sean, his side had flown under our radar a bit despite that 5-0 tonking they gave us the previous season.

And I think you're remembering things through rose tinted glasses, memory has a habit of playing tricks. What was considered to be a marquee signing then wouldn't appear so today. Those signings weren't eye catching then, they just proved to be astute.

That's fair comment. We didn't know too much about those players before they arrived although Sod did with Stock, O'Connor and Hayter with the Bournemouth connection. We knew of Hayter's record hat-trick but he turned out to have more to his game than just goals and turned out to be well worth the money.

Gareth Roberts was already here having a good lower league pedigree at Tranmere and Wales. We knew bugger all about Mills when he first arrived from Man City on loan.

Any number of signings we've had recently had just as much potential, and may do still if the ingredients are right.

Didn't Penney bring in O'Connor?

Yes he did.

Roberts, O'Connor and Lockwood all signed by Penney. Either on consecutive days, or the same day consecutive weeks. Forget which.

What about Shackell he was from memory quite a big signing. Certainly made Mills look a better player

Don’t think we had the two of them at the same time did we?
