If Billy doesn't stay on with us....
« on February 22, 2010, 01:12:54 pm by WSBBA_Ben »
As we all know ladies and gents, we are whitnessing a Striking sensation, not seen in a Rovers shirt since Paul Barnes (Blundell and Heffs are in with a shout too) – Billy Sharp. I work in Barnsley and am rather smug on a Monday/Wednesday morning when Rovers win and extra smug if Billy scores. It seems every club from 12th downwards want him and everyone to the man has written us off signing him.

So what if… what if Billy is offered a contract at the Blunts when Blackwell goes kicking and screaming or if a middle of the road Championship team steams in offering an extra £4k a week, a page 3 girl and a house in the country? ...Who would be your man?

I’ve tracked Gary Hooper at Scunthorpe for a few seasons now, he’s built similar to Billy and he’s a footballer, he’ll take the ball at his feat, back to goal on the half way line but he’ll also fight them 50/50s. This season he’s scored 12 this term & with 30 goals last year, he’s surely worth a punt?

No chance, they will want over £1million for him.

What about Adam Le Fondre they may want a fortune for him but he's young & got 20+ goals now (I know in League 2) but we're still in February, I reckon plenty will be looking at him but worth a punt if we can't work a deal for Billy

Adam Le Fondre would be worth the gamble IMO, plus he'd be more likely to come. Higher level football and he knows all about the Keepmoat! Hooper is out of our league as far as I'm concerned, he'd see this as a sideways step when he can probably move higher.

Le Fondre  has only 1 year left on his contract apparently.

Harsh as it may sound, if we don't throw our hat into the ring where Sharp is concerned then it will be because we aren't in a position to/won't pay the going rate for a quality, proven striker, so there is no point whatsoever in speculating about other quality strikers.

As does Billy, obviously we'd like Billy to come who wouldn't he's as strong as an ox & scores for fun but A L Fon' will cost less & wages shouldn't be an issue.  Not a bad contingency plan me thinks

Scunthorpe have a tendency for unearthing talented competent strikers, whilst its something we struggle with.

What is it they are doing, in that respect, that we are not?

Another Billy, this time Paynter of Swindon. 22 goals this season. I like the lad, just coming in to his prime at 26, doing the business down in L1!

Did I read that correctly? Surely Ryan wouldn't compare one of our players to the urinals and shitter pans would he?

True, but player's wants and needs may lead them to sell. \"Every player has their price\", Paynter's just won't be as much as Sharp's

Haha he would, but the good thing about him is he lets SOD bring in and keep the players SOD wants.  JR may not like some of our players' footballing abilities, but he'll back them whatever.  I like that about JR, he has his opinions but doesn't interfere.

The natives down here rave about Billy Paynter. I've seen him once or twice. He does look a natural. Snag is swindon Twon have already sold one such natural to west brom: Simon Cox. From memory they got somewhere about a million for him. Mind you, I believe he has featured for West Brom several times this season? The natives wowuld be severely pissed off if Paynter goes for less than a million. And as Swindon need to keep their customers onside at the moment, I'm not convinced at all they'd flog him for anything less than three quarters of a million. Wages ought to be a lot cheaper than Billy Sharp's but there is always the risk.... I think he'd be ok, but then, I'm not a professional manager.
