If you think £5k per week is peanuts, can I have your job?

Our average pay last year was £3000 a week not peanuts but we were in the bottom three payers with Scunthorpe and Peteborough.

Err, there was one other club with a smaller wage budget that DRFC last season.

I'll give you a clue. They're in a play-off final and they play by the seaside.

Nothing is impossible whatsoever.

Please check your facts Blackpools overall budget for players and loaness was bigger than ours and not only that they spent £500,000 on one player  and we cannot do that.

Yep. Facts checked. Blackpool's is still smaller!

It just makes their achievement all the more amazing.

Prove it, they claimed their wage budget was 7M last time it was mooted.

Blackpool's wage bill hasn't officially been declared from anyone at their club. However, it is believed to be upwards of £5,000,000 towards £6,000,000 if anyone has actually bothered to read some of Blackpool's forum.
The reason they have splashed out in transfer fees previously is because of a Latvian investor making £1.6M available for transfers last summer. Again, do a bit of searching on the internet and you'll find proof of that with various quotes from quite a few people to back it up.

Moving back to the point, there are still several teams in the Championship with a wage bill at least twice, or in some cases three times, as big as teams like ourselves, Blackpool, Peterborough, etc.

Thought you had checked facts not internet chat?

You have to take into account that our wage bill is approx £6m including non playing staff - so the play staff will be a bit lower than the figures banded around.

When you think, next season we will get c£4.5m from the Premier League/Football League without the income we bring in from ticket sales, commercial activities, merchandising etc - i'd like to think we will have a healthy playing budget.

I dont have the time for all that.

Im sure 5-6m is probably about right for Blackpool. I was just expecting facts after you said 'facts checked'.

Interesting Blackpool thread here discussing the loan of DJ Campbell on £12-£14k per week. In the thread their budget in 2008-2009 is given as £5.1k, they have added Charlie Adam to that, plus a few more rises, then DJ Campbell, I would very much doubt that they had a smaller wage bill than Rovers.

There is another fascinating thread here that compares the squad costs of all the play-off teams - with Rovers getting an honourable mention too

I've checked the facts and in the period to 31 May 2009, Blackpool paid £5,667,384 in wages and associated social security costs, that will be ALL employees of the club and not just the players. That was around £850k up on the previous year and I imagine that it would be even higher this year.

What has been interesting at looking at Blackpools accounts and the accounts of the parent company is that the ground is held separate to the football club, meaning that if Oyston wanted to pull the plug, they could be screwed. It is clear that the land/ground is what he is most interested in - one of his other companies is doing the construction there so he is really milking them. Not to mention that the money that the directors etc put in is through loans, whilst they are not interest bearing (unlike the loans at Forest for example), they are repayable on demand and large compared to the assets/turnover of the club. In respect of the Latvian investor putting money into the club, that was also done via loans.

The more I see other clubs accounts, the more I am thankful for what the board are trying to achieve at the Rovers. They don't put money in via loans, they put it in for additional shares, which means that they will get nothing back until they sell the club, and even then, given that we don't own the stadium, it is unlikely that they will come anywhere close to recouping the monies they have put in.

So they may not splash the cash, it may be infuriating at times, but what they do is sensible and is for the greater good of the club. I'd rather spend seasons struggling in the CCC or even going back to League One then see the club succumb to paying stupid wages and speculating on a whim only for it to backfire.

Be thankful for what we have, i'd say we have one of the greenest grasses in the football league.

Our squad cost around £900k in transfer fees to assemble, the lowest in the division. In comparison Scunny's squad cost above £1m and Peterborough's squad cost above £2m.

Derby County close in on Gareth Roberts deal

Roberts has won nine caps for Wales
Derby County boss Nigel Clough is close to making Doncaster Rovers left-back Gareth Roberts his first summer signing, BBC Radio Derby understands.

Roberts is out of contract in the close season and the Rams have nearly sealed a deal to bring him to Pride Park.

Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll says his side cannot compete with the terms that Derby are offering the 32-year-old.

\"We are aware of the figures that Derby are prepared to go to and we are not in the same league,\" O'Driscoll said.
\"It would be very difficult for the player to turn that down.\"

Wales international Roberts would be the obvious replacement for full-back Jay McEveley, who has not been offered a new contract by the Rams.

Roberts joined Doncaster from Tranmere Rovers in 2006 and has made more than 150 appearances for the club.

We are in the same league but we cannot afford players in this league. Lets wait and see if we can afford League two players!!!Wages have moved on since we could yet our budget has not, although we are told different:-

Average £3000 per week X 20 players X 52 weeks =£3,120,000
Leaves another mythical £2,880,000 for players to get a wage bill of £6,000,000

As pissed off as I am about this, Roberts is 32 years old, how many good seasons has he got left in him, he`s not the quickest and he`s not the tallest, so hopefully we`ll be able to get a taller quicker LB in that can bomb up and down to give us that width when required
