£300K was laughable so they think we'd accept £100K more?

In fairness, Coppinger is 30. In all probability it's only a few years before his value starts decreasing and we ship him off to some lower league club for early retirement.

Mind you, 400k is still a derisory offer for him.

That's how negotiating works isn't it?? You offer a stupidly low price then gradually increase it until you get to an agreed figure or you back out because it's too expensive.

I feel mixed about Coppingers exit. On one hand he's not getting any younger, but on the other hand he's a fantastic footballer on his good days (which are becoming fewer aren't they).

:saywhat:

Not sure who you have been watching the last year, he was the only consistant performer, would say he's good for another 4/5 years :scarf:

We can't afford to lose him atm though, he still offers so much. He's the only player from the midfield who consistantly scores goals and gets assists. The likes of Stock, Oster, Woods, Gillett just don't shoot/score enough as well as getting as many assists as Copps does. He's one of those players, a bit like Billy actually, who you can leave the match thinking \"did he even play today?\" and then you look back and he's set up 2 goals and scored one.

Apart from his value to the team greatly exceeding the derisory 400K, if we were silly enough to accept we wouldn't even get that much because of Exeter's sell-on clause.

Don't get me wrong, I think Coppinger leaving Rovers this year would be a huge step backwards for £400,000! He's a fantastic player on the wing end of story and well able to compete at Championship level. It's just that he's not getting any younger - like Oster - and not too long from now he'll be worth considerably less than he is now.

Personally I think his performance last season was garbage compared to the season before and the season before that, but I don't think he's entirely to blame as the whole team was getting battered each week.

But even with a bad season behind him I still wouldn't sell him...though I would sell Oster.

Coppinger is one of those players, like Beckham, who will play on well into his 30's.  I believe this because his game is not built around pace, in fact, I dont think he has ever had that much of it, but more about skill and close control.  That is something which you never lose.  As long as the engine is good he will play.  I expect him to still be playing for us in 4 years time, no problem.

Have to totally disagree and say I thought Copps was awesome last season and keeps getting better with age!! We definitely miss Copps when he is out of the team and I hope to god that JR & SOD try everything in their power to kepe hold of him no matter what is offered because we will not get a player with the same passion and ability coming to us!!

Supporters Club player of the year, he got.  Ours was George Friend, who just pipped Copps.

We have a choice in my eyes:

1) Look to sell: Would we get anything better than 500k realisticly? Considering his age and that he was part of the side with the worst form since Christmas.

2) Keep him: were not gonna get much more after this season so just keep fending off, after all 500k is no longer a large amount of money to our club...

Not rocket science is it?

30 or no 30 this guy is a truly gifted footballer, the best technique wise I have seen in many a year, our longest serving player, & on his day worth the entrance fee on his own. He is also so important to the way we play. To sell him would be madness, we are still trying to build, not dismantle. He seems happy & settled here & the chairman & management seem happy to keep him. I agree with Rob, even though he is 30, (not exactly over the hill like is it) if he stays fit he will hopefully play for us for a few more years yet. Who on earth would we sign to replace him for the kind of money those carrot crunchers are offering? I'll tell you, we can't.

As for the 'offer' from Ipswich, it is derisory & an insult to both the player & club, even the £400k one! In fact they could double it, add a bit more & it would still be an insult!! Thank god for our chairman, as the days of little Donny being rich pickings for our best players from these so called bigger clubs are long gone. Go on John tell the 'mighty' Ipswich Town where to go.

Agree with this 100%. I said it the first time they bid. Even though he's 30, he's still got a good few years in him yet because he never relied on pace, so even when his legs go a bit, most of the good aspects of his game will still be there.

I'd be gutted if Copps went, tbh. I think we miss him badly when he's not in the team, because he's one of few players in our side who can create something from nothing.

I trust JR to hold out. (Not that it's difficult for him when rubbish offers of £400k come in!)

Age isn't particularly relevant to the bid really, players in their late 20's / early 30's still transfer for big fees if they're good enough to make a big impact on a team and that is exactly what Coppinger is. The buying club may argue that they don't want to pay much more due to future resale value, but what about the selling club, £400k is pretty pathetic compensation for losing one of your best players.

Glad we have dismissed such a ridiculous bid. Would be nice to see Copps get a testimonial here, without doubt one of the best players I have ever seen play for the club.

I honestley think he's worth over a million & still wouldn't sell him for that. Really need to keep him as he's just about the only real creative player we've got (apart from a fully fit Stock).

Ipswich have the money so why don't they pay the price if they wish to strenghten their promotion push . £ Try 5 million for Billy and £800,000 plus a couple of tractors .

That's the thing with valuations, it's not just about how good/poor a player is. To Ipswich and their fans they might see him at 300/400k and nothing more because he players for \"little Donny\". But in our team he does so much and at this moment he's near irreplacable and is as important to this squad as Sharp is.

Ipswich can f**k right off.  I wouldn't see Copps on principle to them now.  And especially to Jewell, the sweaty porn monger.

Have to agree with that, and I've a feeling JR does to a certain extent - how many times do they need telling? I can only conclude that Paul Jewell is in fact human fly against the window.
