Well we now know that the game stats shown by the BBC are fantasy.

Yesterday according to the beeb we had 2 shots on target but somehow managed to score 3 goals..........unbelievable.

Pens don't count as shots on target on the BBC site.

Same as what Gaz says, penalties don't count as it is not from open play. Would Syers effort count as well as it went in off the post?

When we leading 2-0 the stats showed us having only 1 shot on target.

As far as i'm aware, shots that come off the woodwork aren't counted as on target.

Why not? as far as I'm concerned the goal is the target.

The logic is somewhat contradictory - what do they think if it goes in off the woodwork for example.

It's off target, you've hit the post/crossbar and then the laws of physics have caused it to go over the line

BBC stats at lower league level are essentially random, thrown together by whatever PA jobsworth is covering the game. I don't think there are set rules regarding what counts as a shot on target, it's entirely discretionary, at least at this level anyway. Some might not have counted Cotts' goal as a shot on target, for example. Some might not count Syers' as on target, but some 30-yarder that gets blocked as soon as it leaves his boot would count. It's effectively random.

The same stats are used by all and are compiled by the Press association.  I'm normally skeptical about the possession stats but the counts are generally OK.  They don't explain them though.

Shots includes shots on target and off target but not goals.

Shots hitting woodwork are judged off-target.

To get the true number of shots, add goal and shots, it'll be about right (only incorrect if there's an own goal).
