Sammy Chung
« on August 13, 2011, 09:12:20 pm by VivaRovers »
As ComeBackChrisBlack has just reminded me on the Pop Stand fanzine thread, I had an idea for a Sammy Chung t-shirt based on that picture of him on the phone which used to feature above his notes in the matchday programme.

Does anyone have, or can they get a reasonably high res copy of that image? If so let me know please

Probably going to need someone with a programme to scan it.

Just remembered why he was such a legend. I remember going to Mansfield away on their old open terrace in the mid-1990s and getting totally pissed on during a thunderstorm. We lost (think this was a cup game). His programme notes the following week he said that he was sorry for the defeat and that he would never forget the hundreds of people who stood in pouring rain to watch a team he managed play football. Complete gent.

Could you get a high quality scanned image from the programme?

Couldnt we just contact Sammy Chung and in a \"Phoenix from the Flames\" styleee get him to recreate the scene?  I'm sure he'd be up for it (get the club to parade him as a guest of honour before a game).

My favourite memory of Sammy was once, back in the days before the interweb gave us up to date club news at our fingertips (DROS take note), a rumour had gone round that Gary Brabin was to be sold to Coventry.  With me being a nosey bugger, I decided to ring the club.  I got the receptionist, and asked her the question, and she said she had no idea and would put me through to someone who might know.  After a moment of silence, I had Sammy Chung on the other end of the phone, and he confirmed that there had been no approaches for Brabs.

What a gent.  Can you imagine a footy manager today taking the time in the middle of the afternoon to speak with a supporter about a rumour?

Maybe your call was the one when the programme photo was taken? Paul Gilligan had been kept in the portakabin for days waiting for the phone to ring so he could get a genuine shot.

:rtid: Yes, a true Gent against all the odds with that rogue of a Chairman at the time. Deserved a medal!

Thats what I was hoping for... although I don't have any programmes from that period. I had the image saved ready to use a while back only for the laptop it was saved on to die an agonising and frustrating death.

Well done midlandsrover.

Might need a bit of photoshopping but looks like a winner to me.

I especially like his two fingered grasp of the receiver, such a relaxed persona.

Yes, his \"two-fingered action\" certainly came across in our conversation.

I feel I may be spiking a potential Popular Stand article here, but any more detail on the conversation? Did Sammy open the call with a personalised greeting \"Hello there Rob\" or sign off in a jaunty manner \"Keep safe out there Rob - it's a dangerous world\"?

Did he also at any point explain why he kept playing James Meara despite him clearly being dog shite?

Funny that, His comment when asked whether Coventry had approached for Brabin was \"I wish they'd come and take James Meara and his comedy perm!\"

;-)

\"Yes, I hear that Billy Sharp is about to be sold, can you put me through to Mr O'Driscoll please\" shortly followed by \"Sean, is that you Sean? Speak up Sean, I can't hear you Sean\"

I think he did n`t want to get his fingers burnt at the time!

Especially as he had his film career to think about!

I'll never forget waiting outside Belle View's players enterance with an angry mob after a defeat(Richardson out chants, is James Meara's Kens love child, the usual).  Anyway, Sammy(dressed in his Columbo raincoat) come out to talk to us!!! Ill never forget how polite and well mannered he was, and he basicaly agreed with us, he left the club not long after.  A great man who never had a chance thanks to bent Ken! Would love to see him as a guest of honour at the keepmoat! And would deffo purchase the \"Sammy on the phone T-shirt\"!!!!!
