A special Rovers team?
« on December 29, 2011, 11:58:03 am by Dutch Uncle »
The following theoretical side we could put out, given a few recoveries from injury, is unique in Rovers entire history:

Sullivan

Chimbonda
Beye
Diatta
Martis
Ilunga

Stock
Oster
Bamogo

Diouf
Bagayoko

Triv questions:
1   What is so special about this side?
2   Which player is even more special than the rest
3   Which other player also on the books at the current time also qualifies (and is also ' extra-special')

Sullivan is the only English player. (going on where he was born)

Stock was born in Winchester I believe, certainly on the wrong side of Offa's Dyke anyway

In that team is it only Martis and Stock that have won caps whilst at Rovers?

Very nearly Guernsey - the right factor but the wrong players. Only Stock and Shiels have won caps while with Rovers. That might well change though - we may yet be grateful for international breaks :rtid:

I did think Sheils but he wasn't in the original team!

When did martis last play internationally?

according to wiki it was 2008

But he was with us on loan in 2008!

Without opening a can of worms - so did his predecessor as manager

And the manager before that joins Dean on a very short list of players who have played for both Swansea and Cardiff

Also Dean has more international aspects - he apparently moonlights as a singer in Holland (see other thread for picture)

I am fairly confident Martis' one cap for the Netherlands Antilles was not in the short time (5 games) he was on loan with us

I had phrased the original questions to try to pick out Stock as the one player in the team who earned his caps with us, but my answer above muddied the waters with questions 2 and 3 - apologies

Actually loking at the FIFA site he played in 2010 for his country - Meaning he is on that 'Got a cap whilst at Rovers' list!

Sky Sports Annual for 2008-9 shows Martis at WBA already with his one cap at the and of the 2007-8 season - before his loan spell with us - I think I am more inclined to believe that

3 players from a World Cup Q/F squad in that group of players, 2 of them played the whole 120 minutes of that Q/F

Sullivan: only one who wouldn't know what was being said if they started speaking some bizarre dressing room hybrid of Franco-Welsh?

Okay: first Rovers side with no England-qualified players.

Hi Standa - quality comments

By the way a Franco-Welsh language is not as bizarre as it sounds - it's called Breton. Of all Gaelic languages the closest pairing is Welsh and Breton, closer apparently than say German and Dutch, and both parties can easily understand each other.

Unlike English and Geordie????????????
