Title: Rowntree Mackintosh
Post by: Branton Rover on March 21, 2024, 10:01:12 am
We signed two players Grant Morrow & Neil Grayson from Rowntrees. Can anyone remember us acquiring players from another unusual place? The other unusual signing was John Muir who I believe we signed from the Midland Bank in Dudley where he worked as a cashier from memory.

Jos van Nieuwstadt from Excelsior Rotterdam and Jan Budtz and his mate I think were both signed from FC Nordsjælland.

I used to play for a cricket team called Ajax (who also had a football team). They are based in Oegstgeest just outside Leiden and are older than the Amsterdam club who had to ask the Oegstgeest club permission to use that name. We played against Excelsior and Sparta (the football clubs also have a cricket team). Two of the Sparta cricketers I knew were on the Football committee and they knew the old English third and fourth divisions inside out - that is where they mainly scouted - and they knew many Rovers players. It was weird talking in detail about Rovers in Dutch

Didn't we sign someone from Glenn Hoddle's academy during the SOD days?

Ryan Burge?

Edit: Yes it was Ryan Burge. The last club he played for before joining Rovers was Jerez International who were connected with the academy

I forget the full story and I have inevitably not correctly spelled his name, but the Spanish lad who was involved in the first conference season, Nacho Ibarra. Think the story was he phoned up the club and we invited him to training. Didn’t speak much English and wasn’t actually a pro footballer either. Perhaps someone else has the full story.

I thought Ignacio Linares Ybarra was a semi-pro footballer in Spain who was in the UK as a student and phoned to ask for a trial. I thought he was a decent player for that level.

EDIT: He played 77 times for Zaragoza B https://www.bdfutbol.com/en/j/j202239.html (https://www.bdfutbol.com/en/j/j202239.html)

Marc De Val.

I thought it was direct from Real Madrid, but Wikipedia informs me it was Olímpic Xàtiva.

What was the name of the overseas player from conference years who we found out died a few years ago? Bit of a cult hero.

Martin Alainoye From Hatfield Borstal!!

Didn’t get sacked for pinching out of teammates pockets in the changing rooms, another one who got done for that was Alan Buckley’s son who was a player at Lincoln when his dad was manager.
Just looked it up and his name was Adam Buckley, had to do 200 hours community service

Described as the match day presenter at the time as the greatest player to ever play for Doncaster Rovers!
