Just seen it and it did look soft, rather like Marquis' penalty.

A penalty taker is normally someone who's everpresent. Yes, Marquis fits the bill but for me player who's made  career out of sending players the wrong way is Coppinger. Given his ability and captain status I would have thought he should step up to the plate.

Having seen that I am less bothered about the penalty miss - I don't think is was a penalty in the first place, looks to me like the defender got the ball first.

Me too .... IF that Pen had been given against us we would have been rioting !

Pen was a poor one but s**t happens I suppose - at least he had it on target - and no great damage done except for those who had bets on !

I would think Baudry would take a mean penalty. I always like it when defenders take them.

Surely a striker should be the best qualified to score a penalty? A player becomes a striker because of his competence in front of goal, and if there's a lack of confidence or technique that renders the player to have a poor return of penalty success, then his proficiency has to be questioned.

If a team replaced its goalkeeper with an outside player when they conceded a penalty there would have to be doubts about the keeper's ability.

I've often thought the oppsoite. Most strikers score on instinct, often in  the split-second mayhem of a crowded box. The less they have to think the more likely they are to score (Sharp, Blundell are good examples).  Penalties are a set piece. Line it up, clear the mind, put it somehwere where the defence can't deal with it. Playmakers. Go back a couple of decades and defenders were just as likely to take a penalty.

I would disagree with you saying defenders were just as likely to take penalties a couple of decades ago.
I think very few defenders as a percentage of the whole team have been 1st choice penalty takers.
One of the exceptions was Graham Alexander a full back with an unbelievable record on scoring from the spot. Others who spring to mind are Stuart Pearce and Leighton Baines. But there aren't many.

Apart from penalty shoot outs I think I am right in saying COPPS has not taken any penalties since he missed one at home to Walsall about 7/8 years ago, well I think it was Walsall.
He obviously does not want to take them as I am sure he would have put his hand up, especially as he is captain.
There is absolutely no point in someone taking a penalty unless they are happy to and confident about scoring.

Yes I forgot about him.
Still racking my brain though to think of defenders who were regular penalty takers.

Done a bit of research.
David Unsworth scored 22 pens.
Ian Harte 10 pens.
Julian Dicks 15 pens.
Leighton Baines 15 pens.

how many times was this discussed on here with Theo Robinson give Theo a chance to think and he'll screw it up,  give him no time to think and itll be in the back of the net,  I actually think theres a thing here with old style let rip coaching and modern day lets piss ball and fanny about, pass it between everybody and wait for an opening type coaching.

Some strikers need the let rip style and some need the wait for the opening and I'm not so sure modern managers/coaching can differentiate between the two

Ray Stewart played right back for West Ham. He used to love blasting a penalty

Julian dicks used to take them as well. Twenty yard run up and then hit it like he was trying to kill the goalkeeper. POWER!!!

I never saw him, but in 1960-1 we had a player-manager called Norman Curtis. He played many years for the Wendies before joining us.

He was a full back but also a penalty specialist. He would ask a teammate to place the ball on the spot and then run up from half way, hammer the penalty and then run back to his own half. Apparently he only missed one in his career.

Vince Brockie, another full back, was also a very effective penalty taker. Hit hard into the bottom corner. I don't think he ever missed one for us.

Andy Thompson of Wolves (Left back) took Penalties for Wolves and had a near perfect record. I remember him missing one ironically in a Penalty Shoot out v The Owls. Wolves still won that

At Port Vale John de Wolf who Wolves had recently signed from (maybe Feyenoord) a Dutch Team was a Centre Back and a monster of a man . He had scored 2 goals from Corners that day and when a Pen was awarded he made sure that HE and not Thommo got to take it. He too as a defender was a Pen specialist and made no mistake as he buried that one as well for a Hat Trick

It went back to AT after that !

I think it was Jacky Brownsword at Scunthorpe who scored loads of penalties as a full back.

DF needs to grab them all together at the end of every session this week and everybody take 5 penalty's..Come Friday add them all together and whoever did best is the new penalty taker....7 OUT OF 13 has cost us at least 6 points in theory and is something that has to be addressed...
