Don't know the exact times, but I remember they were both in the first half.

You beat me to that...

I think there was another penalty in that game, but one of Kerry Dixon's 4 for Reading.

Should have been 8 though, when Duggie hit the inside of the post from outside the box, and the ball rolled along the wrong side of the goal line....

The keepers were kept busy in that game.....I remember it well. They deserve another similar 'kicking' off us again after the adverse results against them in recent seasons.

In reply to OP my guess it has happened of several occasions. Home to Bristol Rovers in 2007-8 springs to mind - we won 2-0 with penalties by Stock & Heffernan.

If I get some time later I'll look further

We definitely had two penalties at Port Vale in Mickey Walkers first game in charge.

Lewis Guy missed the first and Heffs scored the second.

Recent! The 7-5 win was the last time we beat them. Bloody awful record against them. I remember the following season after the 7-5, they came to Belle Vue near the end of the season, we hadn't been beaten at home all season and they beat us 3-2. Following season, everyone worked their balls off to get the game on so Ian Snodin wouldn't be suspended for the FA Cup game at Everton the following week, they beat us 4-0.

I can remember Andy Woods (think it was him) saving two penalties away at Morecombe I think in our first year in the Conference. Can't remember if it was a league or cup game. Think we won though. Although I could be wrong.

Didn't we win 4-0 or 4-1 at Elm Park a few years later with a hat trick from Alan Brown? or was that earlier.

Forgot about the 2-0 vs Bristol, but yes, now that has been posted I do remember it.

That was a surreal day.  There could even have been more goals too.  Didn't Watford also win 8-0 that day?

If I remember rightly, wasn't Tommy Graham's goal an overhead kick?

In response to the original question I have been able to find 4 occasions in a Football League match when Rovers have scored 2 penalties (I may have missed others):

2007-8 Bristol Rovers Home Won 2-0, Paul Heffernan & Brian Stock one pen each
1994-5 Scarborough Away 2-2 David Roche 2 pens
1982-3 Reading Home 7-5 Ian Snodin 2 pens (out of 3 goals scored)
1926-7 Tranmere Home 4-1 Tom Keetley 2 pens (also out of 3 goals scored)

Norman Curtis scored 2 penalties in the FA Cup in a 3-3 draw at Chesterfield in 1960-1 - so well remembered BigAl

I seem to recall a game away at Scarborough, we were losing 2 - 0 but drew 2 - 2 with two very late penalties.
Same player (Roche ?) scored them both.
One debatable (the first ?) and the second an assault by the goalkeeper.
Somebody tell me it was true !

Beat me to it.

Sorry about stealing your thunder by 39 seconds Yarix - what were the odds on that so long after the first question? ;)

It now seems we have someone who remembers all the occasions except Tom Keetley..................

Yes. Going towards the Rossi end. Looking at the goal times surprised me as I always thought there was a good 20 mins left after the last goal. I also thought Tommy Graham hit the post with another overhead kick to make it 8-5 but seems more believable that it was a Duggie shot. Two Tommy Graham overhead kicks in one game seems unlikely.

Another quite pointless, but interesting, question then.

What's the longest period we've ever gone without being awarded a penalty? Is this last one the longest ever? Bet that'd take a bit of working out......!

Cheers

Talking of penalties

Anyone any idea about Rovers keepers saving more than one penalty in one game.

If my memory serves me right wasn't it Paul Crichton that saved 3 in a row at Rochdale, albeit the same penalty as the Referee kept making them take it again.

Don't think he dared make them take it again after Crichton's 3rd save.

Don't think I can do that one Bob since I don't know of records of penalties missed, certainly not in our early years. I can say we did seem to score far fewer penalties in the first half of the 20th century - so my guess is that is more likely because fewer were conceded/awarded  rather than more missed.

Remember the old days of the Corinthians (not the Brazilian ones)? Their goalies always stood aside to let the opposition put a penalty into an open net since the award meant they had been guilty of dastardly foul play. Mind you Martin Woods would still probably have missed. :chair:

Quite off the top of my head, I seem to think we went through the whole of the 1987-88 season without being awarded a pen.

How many times have we had to re-take a penalty? I remember Heffernan scoring against Crewe in JPT Northern Final and having to take it again, scoring again.

We had to retake one against Macclesfield at home in 2003-04. McIndoe scored the initial kick but missed the retake. The referee in both cases was Trevor Kettle!
