You can get more accuracy by side-footing the ball with the inside of the foot. If you can combine power with this while maintaining the accuracy it would take a great save to stop a penalty.

It looks to me that players tend to shoot with the top of the foot these days, making the direction of the ball a bit of a lottery, especially when it's hit hard.

I was watching the Man United v Bournemouth game on Saturday. Most notable for the incidents with Mings and Ibrahimovic as well as some refereeing that was almost comically bad.

However, it was also a tale of two penalties. Josh King of Bournemouth slammed his into the roof of the net. Impossible to save. Ibrahimovic tried to place his and Boruc guessed right and made a good save. To me the power is the main thing, but I do think if you go high rather than low you take the keeper out of the equation. The risk is hitting or going over the bar, but that is something that could be more or less eradicated by regular practice.

Top corner for me.. if you imagine a keeper could in theory reach anywhere in a semi circle in front of the goal from the goal line upwards then the space left is in either top corner..  sounds obvious really but how many penalties end up there??

Not many, because it's a very difficult skill.

We're playing fourth tier football. Most players at this level aren't going to have the skill level to consistently hit a specific small target, like the top corner from a penalty.

I see nothing wrong with placing it. Stock did it for years and had a decent record. You could just whack it, but then we're still laughing about Martin Woods 7 years on, so it doesn't always work out does it.

Having seen that I am less bothered about the penalty miss - I don't think is was a penalty in the first place, looks to me like the defender got the ball first.

Thought that at the time but hard to tell as ever from the other end.

Specialist job like corners free kick etc etc. Needs someone designated to take them for the season, then go away and practice. Bound to miss the odd one for sure but not as many as we have. Stick with it too. You don't change the corner taker or free kick taker just because they miss hit one.

From Liam Hoden

Ferguson: "If John Marquis had scored his penalties, he'd be on 22 goals now. He won't be on penalties this weekend." #drfc

Ferguson would not say who is on penalties now. "It's someone I know has got a good technique. The important thing is they practice." #drfc

As I said, need a player with good reliable technique. Penalties aren't a lottery as people say.

Who ever the penalty taker is on Saturday ( if needed ) they should aim about 2 foot below the cross bar in the middle of goal, roughly at the keepers head . Every keeper moves one way or another, none of them have the bollox to stand up

I hope he improves his performance after the last couple of matches because he might not be on the pitch if we get one awarded in the last 20 minutes

McSheffrey can hit a good ball very hard, he overhit his crosses/passes  and corners last Saturday

The Cambridge keeper did because he was expecting JM to go down the middle as he tried in the home game in August.

Ray Stewart at West Ham just used to leather the ball home. Think he scored nearly every penalty he took.

Worst one I can remember for Rovers was Alan 'Animal' Little against Fulham. Everyone expected him to absolutely smash it and he more or less past it back to the Fulham keeper.

Who are the six misses this season.
Marquis (2)
Williams
Rowe

Who are the other two?

It's cost us a lot of points over the season it needs sorting out there's no doubt about that. We just haven't got a penalty specialist in the squad so a fair few have had a go. Go for the player that strikes a ball best whether he be a defender or attacker put your foot through the ball and don't place it and as long as it's on target the keeper really shouldn't save it.

I wonder if Alcock could leather a ball. Full backs have a decent rep with pens. No nonsense just smash the skin off the ball.
