John Marquis
« on November 25, 2017, 05:57:32 pm by salisburyrover »
There has been a lot written and said about his attitude and performances of late. I thought he was class today. His work rate was immense and did lots of unseen work which created space and time for others. The goal topped off a good performance and hopefully more to come. A basic observation is the fact as a team we never seem to shoot from any distance or when an opportunity presents itself.

Agreed. Thought he did very well.

It’s a thankless job at times that lone striker role but he ran his blood to water today.

His quality was patchy but you could see his sheer determination to make things happen.

helped him so much when beestin came on to actually run beyond him and help attack the opposition, copps and rowe don't seem able to do this at the moment

Marquis was outstanding today.

As for shooting from distance, there has to be an opportunity to shoot for it to happen.
A group of lads behind me were berating players for not “hitting it” every time one of our players got the ball within thirty yards of goal, irrespective of whether they were closed down, on their strongest side or even having a sight of goal.

Agree with most ofthe above.   Worth also noting 7 goals for him in a so called bad season.  Victim of his own success?

Thought he was much better on the ball than a few weeks ago where he looked poor previously.

he had a great 2nd half when Beestin partnered him, when Alfie is fit what about a front 3 of Marquis, Beestin and May.

Thought Marquis was also excellent at Fleetwood last weekend working tirelessly, it can’t be easy up top alone chasing many lost causes. Many of our fans don’t see that and just see he hasn’t been as prolific as last year. 7 goals is not a bad return at this stage in the season. Get behind him

I have been critical but you couldn't fault him today. He was one of the few who could hold his head up at half time.

Much improved today and tried to stay on his feet most of the time. Looking forward to seeing a Marquis sandwich - Marquis between two Alfies.

He frustrates and makes me happy in equal measure he was never going to win a foul from that ref no matter how many times they grabbed him round the neck and head. I counted at least 3 times in the first half when this happened and instead of running after the ball or into the box he sat on the floor complaining to the ref.

2nd half he got the partner that he needs in young Alfie and copps turned on the style JM got the goal which he needed hopefully he can get out of his funk that he seems to be in and push on now

6 in 19 league games this season is not too bad really. If that rate continues then he will be safely in double figures, which is as much as you can ask for a lone striker (corrected).

Think he means a striker playing upfront on his own.
But in reality if he stays at this rate he will be our best scoring striker at this level of all time

I know Dickos, hence the winky. It was only a tongue in cheek comment.
I've done it myself so many times or fat fingers that I always try to read through mine now before posting.😳

If that rate continues, he’ll end up with 14-15 league goals which would make him our most successful goal scorer at this level for about half a century. As well as leading the line on his tod.

A pedantic point of order BST - most successful goal scoring striker for half a century at this level (well actually since this level started in 1958) - Glyn Snodin scored 18 in 1984-85   :chair:

Edit: BTW this is our 18th season at this level since 1958-59, so a fair few strikers have played for us in those years, including Jeffrey, Sheffield, Kitchen, Heffernan, Hayter, Deane, Regan, Douglas, Paynter, Brown, Hume, Tyson, Williams, ..........

You are kind, but your point about Marquis is a very good one which I am simply supporting.
