Oh no, not another music thread
« on March 26, 2019, 11:05:54 am by ravenrover »
In the dim distance mirk of my memory I can remember, at least I think I can, seeing Paul Rodgers at the Top Rank after Free had split in a band. For the life of me I swear it was called UglyKidJoe but when I google that it comes up as an Amercan band
Any of you in the similar age category remember that gig and what was the band called or are chemicals still rushing through my bloodsteam?

Paul Rodgers was in a short-lived three piece band called Peace between Free and Bad Company. Maybe it was them? They toured with Mott The Hoople.

Similarly I seem to remember seeing Quintessence at the Top Rankaround 1971 tome but can't find any reference to them playing there, can anyone shed any light on that one?

Quintessence never played in Donny Raven. I think the band you saw at the Rank was the Third Ear Band, who were very similar.

Quintessence - Third Ear Band - is someone listing my record collection!!

I got into Jonathan Kelly recently. Apparently he was very big in the Doncaster area in the early 70's and played a rare comeback gig (after 40 years) there a couple of years back.

Did any of you old heads see him, either in the 70's or the comeback gig?

It could have been Quartermass?? It was certainly one or the other as I was there that night. Supported by Uriah Heep if memory serves me right.

I also saw, around the same time, Golden Earing and Argent on the same bill.

You just jogged my memory Martin, and you're right, Uriah Heep were definitely on the same bill as the Third Ear Band; absolutely blew them away as well. Heep were a fantastic band.

Guess that could be who I was thinking of, yep agree Heep were excellent saw them a few times back then. Remember going to the Racecourse to see them but they didn't turn up. They were supported by Sweet who supposedly turned out a brilliant night of rock but we had left once we knew Heep weren't playing

My brother's band played on the same bill as Uriah Heep at the Co-op. I think it was called the Attic then. Uriah Heep wanted to go on first so they could celebrate one of the band members birthdays, so my brother's claim to fame is they topped the bill to Uriah Heep!

Can only really remember their classic track 'Gypsy though seem to think the support had a very distinctive blond haired drummer.
Also ears were ringing until I got home.

An interesting side-note about the Coop; I once read that when the Beatles played there, it was Pete Best's last performance as drummer before Ringo joined.

On the same subject, here's a question; how many times did the Beatles perform in Donny, and what were the venues?

I've a feeling Raven will know this.

I'll give it a bit longer; you're all getting close with the Gaumont, but nowhere near with the amount of times, or the other venues.

Where's Raven?

I'm here but have to admit I haven't got a clue! My beloved went to see them at The Gaumont but admits she really preferred The Stones.
Now if we want to talk about Dylan ...................!

OK, most of you are too young to remember, so here it is. The Beatles performed in Donny 5 times; 3 times at the Gaumont, once at the Coop, and once at the St James street swimming baths.
