Paul Rodgers was in a short-lived three piece band called Peace between Free and Bad Company. Maybe it was them? They toured with Mott The Hoople.
Similarly I seem to remember seeing Quintessence at the Top Rankaround 1971 tome but can't find any reference to them playing there, can anyone shed any light on that one?

I think the band you saw at the Rank was the Third Ear Band, who were very similar.

Supported by Uriah Heep if memory serves me right.I also saw, around the same time, Golden Earing and Argent on the same bill.
