Title: Play off teams vs Rovers
Post by: andysly on May 18, 2017, 07:28:58 pm
Not noticed before tonight but our record vs the better teams in the division was pretty crap.
Are we actually as good as we think ?

Blackpool - lost twice
Carlisle - home draw, away defeat.
Luton - home draw, away defeat.
Exeter - home defeat, away win.

Plymouth beat us home and away as well, even the 6 points against Portsmouth makes it just less than 1 point a game.

We most definitely weren't as good as some of us thought we were.

Well we managed more points from 46 games than 21 other teams in our league. We were the 3rd best team in the league that is the only fact that matters.

We might have done shit against the play off teams but if they were better than us they should have done better against the teams below them. You can't judge where a team should finish based on who beat who or we should be above Portsmouth.

Carlisle pull level 2-2 in et AND YES Exeter score then and win 3-2

We were excellent at times and frustratingly absent at others, particularly at the end, but I'd take a repeat next season

We most definitely weren't as good as some of us thought we were.

Or as good as the manager thought we were...

Well yes, unless he kept his negative thoughts to himself and only talked about the positives in an attempt to motivate the players and fans.

We were unlucky  in a lot of those games , Plymouth twice ,  Carlisle away , Blackpool home and Wycombe at  home when Etheridge gifted them two goals.
We should have got something against Exeter but for suicidal  defending.

I  admire your positiveness but surely we were equally fortunate in some of the games we won and drew for that matter.

One in particular that springs to mind is the Mansfield home game.

We're only talking about  results against teams in the play offs.

Mansfield were fighting for a play-off place at the time, and probably Wycombe would have settled for one when Etheridge gifted them two goals.

Or maybe he just overestimated his and their ability and/or mental strength.

Surely Red, EVERYONE overestimates their ability?

DonnyOsmond has said it correctly we were 3rd best in the league no matter what the results were against other playoff teams, consequently, they have no bearing going forward.

I maybe in the minority here Sly,but I prefer it when our record is like that,If we lose games,I want them to be against the top/play-off teams, how many seasons have we had, with us beating top teams but then struggling against the bottom teams?Far more annoying and confusing.Atleast this way we have a pretty consistent reflection of how good/bad we have been. Now more important,is how good/bad we will be with the changes DF makes to the team for league one.

I couldn't care less who we won/draw or lost against.  At the end of the day we accumulated the 3rd best points tally in the league and that was enough to get us promoted.
Job done,enjoy your summer .

If we'd beaten Plymouth just once we'd have finished top, just saying... ;)

If we'd beaten Accrington just once we'd also have finished top.

Aye, but this is a thread about the teams in the playoffs and above...

Yeah but as others have stated, it doesn't really matter who you beat as long as you beat more than the other sides do.
Pompeys record against the top sides wasn't great and they won the league

Not necessarily, we drew with Accrington in February, if we had beaten them that day we'd have finished second on goal difference.

Maybe not being too cocky about going back into League 1 will prove to be a good thing.
