Most Overrated Movies?

We've all experienced it; a new movie is released that critics adore and people won't stop talking about, but despite your best efforts, you can't see what all the fuss is about.

What movies really bug you, for no other reason than it seems that you're the only person who thinks it's just "alright"?

I'll start us off with pretty much anything by Quentin Tarrentino.

Maybe not overrated but I've tried to watch The Deer Hunter 3 times and never got past 20 minutes.

Trainspotting-

As a nipper I spent many happy hours on Doncaster station, on Hexthorpe Bridge and other exotic locations taking down the numbers of locomotivs.
Never has a movie so dismally failed to live up to the promise of its title.

This won't be a popular choice, but Star Wars.  Probably a good film, and certainly ahead of its time but hyped so far over the top for my liking.  Sci-Fi is my favourite genre but I never could understand Star Wars

The one that tops my list is Lost in Translation. Three hours waiting for something, ANYTHING to actually happen. Utter, utter shite.

I must disagree with the above re Tarantino though. I love pretty much everything he's ever done as a director or producer. He's one of the best auteurs of all time IMHO, right up there with Hitchcock. It's all about personal taste though.

I used to think Lost in Translation. I watched it for the first time when I was actually in Tokyo and I don't think I gave it a fair crack as I wanted to be out experiencing the place rather than watching a film about it. However, I watched it at a special screening recently with my girlfriend and quite liked it - you're right, nothing really happens, but I thought it was amusing pretty good second time round. Can see why people would dislike it though.

Never got into Star Wars so I'd agree they're over-rated. Harry Potter isn't a good shout for an overrated film, loads of people think the films are crap!

In terms of one that everyone seemed to love, I didn't particularly rate Inception.

Without wanting to sound pretentious, I'm now going to be extremely pretentious!

I like Deathproof for the cinematography and critical fandom of the B-movie genre. It's not so much the film per se that I like as the way its made. The fourth wall is only ever implied and rather than becoming at one with the storyline, I gained pleasure through my reaction to great direction and camera work. Good soundtrack too.

I never really got Ferris Bueller.  The Breakfast Club neither.

I remember being disappointed with Judge Dredd, seemed about half an hour too short, as if they forgot to distribute the last reel.

I don't watch a lot of films, so it wouldn't really be fair to comment. However I tend to find that when someone tells me I  "must see" a film it is a huge disappointment. "Local Hero" was a prime example of this.

For this very reason I am probably one of only eight people on the planet who has never seen "The Shawshank Redemption."

TRB, I watched shawshank last weekend (was stuck at work with nothing doing) otherwise id have been number 9 who had not seen it.
To be fair it was ok, Like prison break meets forest gump!
Two recent ones that I came away from thinking "well that's 2hrs of my life gone" were The imitation game and The theory of everything, utter tosh.

Make that two of the eight, I've  never watched it either, in fact most of the films on here have passed me by... Harry Potter, Jaws and the first three Star Wars aside all of which I love. I'm not big on worthy or heavy grown up films. I'm a animated or Jerry Bruckheimer film kind of girl.
