Greenwood at m utd
« on September 20, 2019, 09:44:11 am by phil old leake »
Another young lad that’s come through at a club proving if you’re good enough you’re old enough
We keep being told that we have some really good youngsters reforming well for the club at various levels.

We are lacking a striker and it’s going to remain a big problem until it’s resolved

Let’s try one of our young lads in the first team and see if they can step up

For me it’s a no lose.  We carry on not scoring or we find a talent

The young lad Watson seems to be doing very well in the youth team but i’m sure our fans would knock the confidence out of him if he doesn’t manage to perform in the 1st team.

Though I agree it is the Managers opinion that counts...I can’t see what magic formula is used to draw the conclusion that a player is indeed good enough...
The only true way is to plonk them in a first team game and see what they can do

The manager needs to know when a youngster is ready to play in the 1st team, he will try them with the 1st team in training as will have happened to Greenwood.

The magic word being “ training” .....nothing can be gauged from that....
The reality is on the pitch

"Nothing" can be gauged from training!? Why do they bother then? Ridiculous to suggest that how players perform in training has no bearing on matches or team selection.

Not for the young ones it can’t...ridiculous to think otherwise...

If a manager doesn’t think a player is good enough why train them. I know that they can be developed and improved but it seems to me that managers are unwilling to take a risk
If it hadn’t been for injuries and a brave manager no one would have heard of Marcus Rashford
If mourrhino had been their manager at that time he’d probably be finished or playing in the championship.
Managers need to be brave and take the risks.

The question is at what point in a young players development does the manager take a chance and play him !

They can glide past challenges in training but it’s being able to glide past a Rotherham defence that counts...

Rashford got plenty of playing time under Mourinho so think that comment is slightly unfair. I don't really think Greenwood has been chucked in at the deep end either - he's been in and around the first team for several months, toured and had a full pre-season with the first team and has made a number of sub appearances.

Ultimately Moore sees them in training and if someone is doing the business there then they will get their chance.
