Marquis rejects offer
« on July 06, 2017, 05:56:34 am by watto-drfc »
John Marquis has rejected the offer of a new contract at Doncaster Rovers, boss Darren Ferguson has revealed. With the striker having entered the final year of his contract at the Keepmoat, Rovers offered what Ferguson termed ‘fair’ fresh terms following his superb first season with the club. Marquis however was not satisfied with the offer and rejected the deal. Despite rumoured interest from the likes of Ipswich Town and Wigan Athletic, Ferguson insists no clubs have been in touch with Rovers about Marquis. And he also says he will not imbalance his squad for any one player.“We’ve offered him a contract which he’s declined to sign at the moment,” Ferguson told the Free Press. “I think it’s a very fair contract, giving respect to what he did last season when he had an outstanding season.“At the moment he’s rejected the offer and that is where it is at really.“We’ve not had one enquiry about him.”

Agents probably telling him he's great and could play in Premier league. Well after 1 good season looks like he could go, so if his agent thinks he's that good let's see what he's worth

His entitlement really.  Ferguson does right offering what he thinks is right value.  A little surprising though that the money is important to him.

I'd just keep him. Only get a few hundred thousand for him anyway with a year left on his contract.

As others have said even an article there's no need to worry Johns going no where he's even doing a v log when they go to Scotland. Least we know now the offer made by the club was not up to Johns expectations. Let's hope the club and player can get to agreement. If not and we get no offers then John stays for the season. If the club get offers then they will have to decide what to do, increase their offer or accept. But let's not forget to replace him like for like will cost as much if not more.

It's another small indication that the budget isn't much more than last season if at all. Fergie showed last season what he can do with a top end budget.

He's only had one good season in a shit league 2. I want him to stay at the club but if he starts to think he's bigger than the club ship him out.

But if he goes who do we replace him with?
DF and GB could not get 2/3 of the targets for what ever reason to replace Andy Williams, so how will they have the money to replace John.

And as GazLaz says it's another small indication the budget isn't much more than last season.

If his shan't has put the feelers out and found out clubs are interested and would double his wage potentially then fair play to him. I definitely wouldn't sell him though and let him go on a free next season.

Last season's budget apparently wasn't much lower than the season before don't forget and that was a top 10 League One budget. That'll be what we're working with again.

Surely Marquis won't be selfish and want money that'll mean we can't strengthen the right areas. Hopefully he'd realise we won't do as well because of his greed.

He scored 26 goals and we scored 85 goals in that league we should get close to his requirements but it looks that DF is towing the party line because he may not have the funds to get the players he needs.

The midfield players he wants are loans which they always have been. The centre half requirements have changed. From young to experienced to now potentially we will sign one. Yet in your words we conceeded 55 goals in the "shit league"

He won't perform next season like last.  He will work just as hard if not harder but won't score 20+ goals again.
I've said it on here before. From the clubs point of view cash in.  From his point of view IF he gets the chance to leave for more money he's a fool not to take it.  How many people on here wouldn't change their job for more money. Not many.  Hoping he stays for his work rate and commitment but I'll be surprised if he does

Never a good situation when money outweighs a players contentment with their surroundings. Fuelled by agents, he's probably convinced he's worth more and maybe there are clubs willing to pay more.

Do you remember Coppinger saying the grass isn't always greener when he referred to players jumping ship too soon? Well I hope John talks to Copps and thinks about this.

If he signs an extension and continues to score goals then his worth will increase even more and that will be good for all parties.

I hope he understands the consequences on the rest of the squad in demanding more. This is how clubs get into financial doo doo when wage levels escalate.

Don't get me wrong, you'd hope there's be some elasticity in what we could offer but if he's wanting to exceed that then where do you go?

The good news is, if no offers come in then it's in his interest to play well to attract offers. You just hope he's not turned by an extra £50 a week to up sticks to Barnsley etc. That will tell you how much he thinks of Donny Rovers!

I would hope that the offer rejected is the  clubs first offer & that they have some flexibility to offer more. To go in with your best offer from the off is a bit stupid!! Lets see how things develop.

It will be good news for the CEO and the club because their is no pressure on their contract offer. They will probably on the lower end of any elasticity if there is any.

Let him go only if we can get Madden. At least he's proven in L1.

Whatever it happens it's another example of inexperience and poor management by the decision makers. Should have offered him a contract a lot earlier than they did when he would see it as a bonus payrise.

And done it quietly, not announce it telling everyone there would be no problems.

Maybe DF was trying to put pressure on John to sign by going so public and confident about it?

Huh? When is early enough, then Gazlaz?  An offer has been made half way through his current contract with a year left to go.  Are you suggesting that we should offer players a contract now and then another one every few months?

As soon as you realise his stock/price is increasing tie him down. The fact he will now likely leave in a cut price deal or for free shows there has been mismanagement somewhere along the line.

It was obvious by January he'd been a better signing than his initial 2 year deal implied.

If he does go he will obviously be missed especially his goals but if he wants away then fair enough we want players who want to be here, anyhow he was less than average for us after the Grimsby away game so I'm not that worried if he leaves.

That's extremely naive as are comments about the budget. Whatever the budget is, it us just that. You can't pay more than what you have! Is it responsible for a manager not to offer more? It's just about simple choices and sacrifices. If you sacrifice a wage ceiling then you're potentially going to get in a heap of trouble with the next contract negotiation, and the next etc.

Rejecting a contract does mean he wants to leave, it means he believes his worth is more than the CEO and the club are offering, its part of a negotiating process. The club have to decide if he goes can they get better for less money.

You're assuming his agent would advise him to sign when no doubt the advice would be to wait and hold out for more once promotion was secured and his goal tally improved.
