Here's the ITEN Match Preview for you to read before kick-off:
https://www.intotheemptynet.com/post/iten-match-preview-southend-h (https://www.intotheemptynet.com/post/iten-match-preview-southend-h)
Very glad I didn't waste time on Likely Line-Ups for this one, as I did not envision Joe Wright being dropped! Surprised and a little disappointed at that to be honest, but in Darren we trust.
-
Disappointed wright isn’t starting unless he’s in need of a rest it would appear to be a case of loan signings been required to start or at least favourited.
We all want permanent signings but if we’re to use the full loan allowance every year (which makes huge sense financially) then no point signing too many 1st team players permanently. The loan players will have to start regardless! At least this season and last season we’ve had good loan players
-
Not sure what loanees have to do with it - both players dropping out and coming in are on permanent contracts..
-
Good morning all, exciting game ahead looking forward to this

Wright permanent, John loanee.
-
Compared with the starting eleven on Friday (ignoring positions) Wright and Gomes are replaced by Coppinger and Sadlier

John hasn’t come in for wright though.. not for the team overall that is..
-
This is very stop start so far. Southend giving as good as they get. No real quality being shown by either team. Rovers have one disallowed by Ennis that was given offside before he hit a lovely finish.
And then a poor back pass from Cameron John nearly gave Southend one on a plate.
Poor control by Sadlier when a decent touch would have put him one on one 20 yards out.
Maybe, maybe, Rovers have just about started to assert themselves.

Everything has to be a conspiracy, doesn't it? I'd rather Wright played but John has been a sub plenty since he came back from injury, he obviously isn't just being played due to being a loanee.
-
One or two poor early passes going astray
-
Dieng missed a cross early on he should never have come for, but redeemed himsef with closing down the Southend striker.
Really poor touch from Sadlier when played in but Copps should maybe have put more on the pass.
Sloppy start really, hopefully we can start to get a foothold soon.

70:30% possession to us, according to BBC

Could sharpen up a bit..

Great work by James and a smart finish from Ennis from the edge of the box..
-
1-0 Ennis, a lovely turn and finish from the edge of the box inside the keepers right hand post.

1-0 Ennis
-
Ennis! Good touch with his back to goal to make a bit of room, turned on the edge of the box and fired low into the corner.
Good to see that a bit of competition brings out the best in him ;)
-
Brilliant finish that was, Ennis has this in his locker.
Have to say John has had a few shaky moments so far. Maybe just getting back into the central defensive groove after playing at full back.
-
Southend immediately break and hit the post. Poor initial clearance from John in there and Halliday should probably have got his head on it before the Southend player.
Game’s come to life!
-
Should be 1-1, and some sloppy defending again by Cameron John.
I’m going to be forgiving and say the pitch isn’t the smoothest ever and the ball is bobbling a lot.

Yes the pitch spoilt an early rovers attack
-
According to Sky Sports, up to the goal, the game “the game was dire in the extreme”!
-
fairly accurate
-
Misplaced passes rather than dire..
First bit of quality and we score.

We’re not out of second gear yet..

Humphrys off injured according to BBC?
-
Scunthorpe's new goalie has let one in. Losing 1-0 at Northampton.

2-0 Sads

We want eight....

Humphrys off injured according to BBC?
Correct
-
Nearly got caught out overplaying there - Dieng’s clearance closed down but didn’t fall well enough for them and ended up just firing wide from outside the box.
2 nowt as I type!
-
Quality goal that. He thought about it and put it exactly where it needed to be put.

We are now, eh, IDM?!

We are a bit slack at the back - over confodent?

No - score yes, overall play no.
-
Counter attack from Rovers, 4 on 3 ended with Sadlier curling in from about 15 yards out.
Great to go into half time (most likely) with a 2 nil lead when we’ve been nowhere near our best and Southend have matched us for the most part. Pretty sloppy at the back.
-
We have had over 70% of the ball in this first half, dominant that is. If our passing was a bit sharper we might be out of sight already.

Yes but the lack of quality at the back has nearly cost us two goals.

Decent half that. A bit slack at the back - Cameron John mainly.
-
Bugger. Portsmouth just scored in the 50th minute of the first half!
BobG
-
the score reflects the positions in the league, individually Southend are playing well but as a team they can't pull it together
-
James and Ennis best players first half..
-
If we are to continue playing out from the back then the decision making and execution need to be much much better.
However 2 nil up is not to be sniffed at.
-
Attendance 7,063 but at as 5 degrees forecast it's hard to blame people for staying at at home
-
Funny old game, we played better overall in the first half at Sunderland, but that was against a much better side..
Still, two good goals from two of our front men..
I can see Cole coming on for the last 30 mins especially if the score is the same, or more..
-
yep, it's a perfect scenario, to come on a couple of goals in front for his first game
-
the goals will get a few replays up on youtube they were great
-
Just seen the half time stays that say we have won only 25% of tackles .. we do look to be light in them and need to toughen up a bit . Up that stat and we should complete the win for me
-
On the John/Wright debate - Wright was friends with Jordan Sinnott who was killed in Retford on the weekend, so Joe's mental state may have been a consideration for the selection choice by Darren.
-
Be good for Cole and watters to get decent time on the pitch if we can stay tight for the next 10-15 min or add another
-
3:0
-
Peterborough 2 up. Rotherham beating Ipswich
BobG
-
3-0 out of nothing really.. same patten of sloppy play followed by a moment of quality delivered by Taylor for Sads to head in..
-
Love Copps to get one - for old times sake...
-
Another well taken goal. The delivery and finish made to look easy.

Wycombe 2 up after 10 minutes - game was delayed start
-
Southend struggling to get into the attacking half
-
Blair on for Taylor..
-
Time for a Cole debut?
-
I think so..
-
3/4 of the game gone and still in 2nd gear..
-
3-1.. speculative long shot took a wicked deflection over Dieng.
-
Should be 4-1.. vintage Copps curler hits the post..
-
Think that was a really disappointing goal to concede - the goal itself was obviously very lucky but it came from a really weak clearance from Blair (I think?) Completely avoidable and not by a long way the only time we’ve been sloppy at the back.
-
Lovely effort from Coppinger, that would have been a great goal. Cole looks to be warming up now...
-
Blair looks a bit rusty, then again he’s not played much recently..
Cole on for Ennis..
-
Avante' Devante
-
Ref is shite
-
Alfie May just scored for Cheltenham!
-
Two recent departed players just score- Alfie and amazingly Donervan Daniels for Luton
Marquis just scored a penalty as well - Portsmouth really taking a chance there ;)
-
Marquis has got a pen.
BobG
-
Theo Robinson has scored two too
-
FT 3-1
-
Finished..
Decent 3 points even with a bitty performance..
-
Yes, very pleased with that - a comfortable win without us having to play anywhere close to our best.
-
Never out of second gear so it’s hard to judge, three goals and three points. Can’t complain. Although I’d be worried if we weren’t winning tonight.
Onto the next one
-
People say there’s no such thing as an easy game but before tonight Southend has 13 points from 26 games. Relative to the league they’re in, they’re by some measure the worst team in the country. If we hadn’t won tonight you’d seriously question if we could make the play offs.
But you still have to beat the team on the pitch and we did that relatively comfortably. Some hairy moments at the back aside we were in total control and could have had a few more goals ourselves. I still think we are a couple of players light but the first eleven is looking good with some options on the bench. If we can get a couple more in and have some luck with injuries, and cut out some of the sloppiness, we are looking good for a play off push.
