Help from the Historians?
« on January 10, 2013, 12:34:17 pm by RoversAlias »
I was just wondering if anybody would be able to help me out with this query. My grandad gave me a team photo of our side that he had stored away and had stumbled upon, and he was just wondering if I'd be able to track down the date or season that it came from. I can't scan the photo onto my computer or anything like that, but description is as follows:

The photo is black and white but the team appear to be wearing white shirts with dark collars, dark shorts and dark socks with two white rings on the top of the socks. The 11 players are, left to right:

Back Row: L. Hainsworth, S. Bycroft, K. Hardwick, L. Graham, W. Jones, B. Herbert
Front Row: A. Calverley, P. Doherty, H. Tindill, T. Martin, J. Dubois

Only other text is the DONCASTER ROVERS F.C. above the list of names and "Best Wishes from SPORT" underneath. Some real legends of the club on this photo. I'm assuming it's from the period 1949-53 when Peter Doherty was player-manager but it'd be much appreciated if anyone who could provide any help or info pinpointing the exact date or at least the season.

That exact list of players lined up against QPR in a Division Two game on November 25th, 1950 at Loftus Road. They won 2-1.

Whether it was this game, or indeed season...couldn't say.

N.B. This was the kit from the 50-51 season:

P.S. If you can't see this, have a look here: http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Doncaster_Rovers/Doncaster_Rovers.htm

I think it's 50-51 but a couple of names I don't recognise.

We did indeed win that game but lost at home to them 2-0 in front of 16,344 finishing 11th that season.

Intriguing Rob. I can see the picture clear as day in Chrome.

However in Firefox there's nothing there - when logged in or out.

This issue keeps cropping up when posting images. Something to look into perhaps?

That's because you're not quite that old yet Rob. :)

I can't see it either and I'm using Chrome, but copying the URL into the address bar brings it up fine.

The kit on that link for 50-51 does match the photo, but then so do a couple of others from around that period

1950-51 seems like a good bet then, especially if that is the same list of players from the QPR game. My grandad did some work on photography and recording of matches at Old Belle Vue during his younger days so it could well be from this that he acquired the photo.

I've just done it by deduction , one of the players arrived in 1950 and another left in 1952.

That's a good looking kit too. Would be a good away strip design even nowadays.

Ah thank you Hoolahoop, looks like it's been pinned down then! Thanks everyone.

And I agree, it is a very smart looking kit.

Here is an image of the season previous and I think the team photo of the XI photo you have (Since some players are wearing the hoops from 49')
