Summer as it's meant to be

I had a lovely day weatherproofing my shed and listening to Yorkshire seeing off Middlesex.

We should start the footy season after the August Bank Hol

There is summat to be said for starting a bit sooner and thinning out the fixtures over Jan/Feb, when the weather is often poor.

God, imagine how crap our team would be if the season started in early August!

Something to be said for playing fewer games. Get rid of the Capital One Cup, cut the PL to 18, all other Leagues 20.

Which clubs would we lose on the way then John?

I suggest Stoke City, Newcastle Utd, Reading and Birmingham City for starters. Much better off without that lot.

If they cut the number of Premier League fixtures, the clubs would only make it up with more tours of the far east, middle east and north America.

There might be something in getting rid of the league cup for the benefit of the FA Cup and the pointless group stages in the European club championships. They won't contemplate that though.

Tempting, Bob, but no. I'd have four leagues of 20, so the number of clubs in the FL actually increases slightly. Adding in the top 6 in the Conference, nearly all of whom are full-time anyway, wouldn't dilute quality.

I do think there is a risk that top flight clubs would play more friendlies- which is one of the reasons I'm sceptical about the benefits of a Winter Break. Unless of course the FA grows some and goes back to the old days when the "Closed Season" meant just that.
