England World Cup Squad
« on May 11, 2018, 12:07:27 pm by Move DRFC »
Southgate names his squad on Wednesday which is well ahead of the FIFA deadline. Who's on the plane then? Any wildcards? Quite a bit of talk for Sessegnon to make the cut. Who's number 1? Chamberlain's replacement etc.

Should be interesting.

I've attached the team i'd take. Wouldn't be opposed to seeing Shelvey, Sessegnon, Loftus Cheek or Sancho in the squad though.

Never mind the team. Who’s doing the World Cup song? I’d fancy letting Sleaford Mods have a go at it. But I expect it’ll be some vacuous non-entity singing some sub-Eurovision pap.

Ben Foster has had a great season I'd take him.

Well that’s saved our ears.

On which topic, somebody needs to get Trippier to a hospital. Looks like his right ear is rotting away

Nick Pope has to be in with a shout. A nobody really coming into the season then Heaton gets injured and he's really taken his chance. Heaton might struggle getting the jersey back now, he's been that good.

Didn't he retire himself?

Where's Milner? Superb for Liverpool lately!

Centre of that defence looks very weak.

Looks like Walker could be used as a centre back in a 3 so that means Walker, Jones, Maguire & Stones centre backs with Dier who can play there as well. Don't think we've got many other great options

I’d definitly take Shelvy. He’s got a bit of quality. Playing Walker at right centre half both negates his strength and puts more emphasis on the thing he’s not good at. Poor move I think.

I'd say your initial squad is too stocked on left backs/left wing backs - even though Young & Delph are versatile there's 4 players there who have played most of their games at LB this season. I'd ditch one and take another centre half. Other than that I don't think you're too far off who I would expect to go (although I'd probably try and find a place for Shelvey). Wouldn't take Hart either but I expect he will go.

Do agree that Walker is better at wing back but he's got all the attributes to be just as good at right centre back, plus Trippier offers a lot at wing back.

Wilshere?

He can't strike a match let alone last one...

My only issue is joe hart.  If he gets picked I won’t be that interested.  It will prove jobs for favourites and not being picked on form.   My wild card might be Shelvey. I’ve not seen him but every week the pundits are raving about his performance

The fact he can’t defend is a slight concern.

Also include Loftus Cheek I rate him highly

Loftus Cheek - sounds like a QPR fan medical condition.

Apparently we haven’t had an official one for 20 years

Bizzare. The three best England performances of the past 50years came when we had the 3 best official songs (70, 82 and 90).

You could add Euro 96 to that with the 3 Lions song

Yeah but that wasn’t the official song. The official one was a bag of month old cack by Mick Hucknall.

And in any case, Three Lions was little more than a nostalgic nod to Back Home.

There is, of course, nowt to match World in Motion.

Yes, even now it staggers me that anything as good as World in Motion could be released as an official World Cup song. Outstanding.

It was just so easy for New Order.

They’d already been THE definitive post-punk as Joy Division. Then effectively invented 1980s techno/guitar music. With hindsight it was obvious that they could make the best football song of all time too.

I reckon they’d even have won Eurovision if they’d tried.

Seems Hart has been dropped from the squad. Quite the turnaround for his career, and not in a good way. Pickford, Butland and Pope get the nod for the keeper's jersey.

Walker playing right of centre in a three at the back , is because you have to have pace to cover. the other side is going to try and exploit the wide areas when the wing backs push up.
It,s a no brainer, and the reason we have failed to play that way with centre halfs who are not quick successfully.
