Here's the photo again

It is Alick and the opponents are Exeter City. The game was played on 7th September 1968 and Rovers won 3-1. Alick scored all three. His final hat trick for Rovers.

... and Wilcockson played so still sticking to him for background but (unhelpfully) Rabjohn and Gilfillan both played as well so we cant eliminate one ! So who is that half in shot ?

My vote Rabjohn

Bloody rubbish Boycott!! Scores of 9 and 6.

Both not out

We've been crying out for someone who could occupy the crease in Australia, Sir Geoffrey was yer man

?? He was out in both innings.

In those days you could estimate the attendance by looking how full the corners were. Although there's only one corner in the picture I'd say there was about 8,590 there.

Great find BB. I remember Pat Partridge. Was quite a high profile ref. Didn't he ref in the World Cup?

That season 68/69 was my first. My first home game being Peterborough. I wish my memories of Alick were stronger but alas only fleeting images come into mind. I do recall picking out Brian Usher as my favourite player.

Yes good find BB, I was thinking it was Pat Partridge but I thought the ref was a bit shorter than I pictured him.

Quite enjoyed trying to unravel that puzzle and it's good to know we have some very learned gentleman on this forum.

Does anyone else have some more obscure/old photos from matches that we can have a bash at?

It just shows how people can be wrong (even me!). I'd have put my starboard knacker on that picture being Rovers v Colchester.

Well done BB.
I remember Patrick Partridge. He was one of the top refs at that time.
By the way John, I got 9 right. Got Leeds road wrong.

I remember Pat Partridge refereeing one of our matches at Barnsley in the 70s. The game was a draw, 1-1 I think. At the end as he was walking off an old bloke strode up to Partridge and proceeded to give him a torrent of abuse. It was so bad the coppers arrested the bloke and I think he got fined. It was surreal to watch, and the odd thing is I don't remember any particularly controversial decisions that day.

And here's Pat Partridge with Ian Snodin at Belle Vue in around 1980.
