Random Stat for John Marquis

His 38 goals for the club over the last two seasons (with still 9 games to go) is the highest for the club over two consecutive seasons since Peter Kitchen (51) and Brendan O'Callaghan (46) in 1975-76 and 1976-77.

thanks Dutch Uncle you set me up perfectly for me me to remind you all of how i warned you all of the "consequences !! " of signing JM and how lucky Rovers were he didn't go to his former manager at the Blades

Northampton and Oxford both got promotion by signing on loan players that were too good for this division

and now I remember thinking Marquis was far too good for the 4th division

on that basis I have to admit THAT IS ONE HELL OF A SIGNING

THANK GOODNESS FOR BILLY SHARP I SAY !!!

because the blades new manager can't really get rid of Sharpe (he has made him captain )
because if sharpe wasn't there I feel certain Marquis would have followed the x Northampton manager to sheff united

Marquis is also the joint second top scorer in the EFL over that time period since the start of last season. Only Billy Sharp has scored more across the three divisions.

“Who’s the second best striker on the football league..” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it!

and the constituents of his goal tally is now "penalty free*" (probably gluten free as well)

* no penalties are being scored to artificially inflate his "end" product

Not 100% sure but I think the following matches were against Grayson:

2005-6 Blackpool Away 2-4 (FL1); Blackpool Home 4-1 (FAC)
2006-7 Blackpool Home 0-0 (FL1); Blackpool Away 1-3 (FL1)
2010-11 Leeds Home 0-0 (Champ); Leeds Away 2-5 (Champ)
2011-12 Leeds Home 0-3 (Champ)
2014-15 Preston Home 1-1 (FL1); Preston Away 2-2 (FL1)
2017-18 Bradford Home 2-0 (FL1)

If so that would be Played 10: W2 D4 L4

Dutch. I was wondering last night about the very issue of when we last had a striker score more than Marquis over 2 seasons. Thanks for the info.

In terms of league goals for us, since we returned to the FL, Marquis now sits 3rd I think (assuming Soccerbase.com is correct).

Coppinger: 56
Sharp: 44
Marquis: 37
Heffernan: 35
Hayter: 33
Green: 31
Brown: 29
McIndoe: 28
Blundell: 27
Williams: 23
Fortune-West: 19
Tyson: 18
Price: 17
Stock: 17

Marquis's goals per start ratio (37 in 81 - 0.46 goals per start) is almost identical to Sharp's for us (44 in 92 - 0.48), Sharp's being the highest strike rate on the list (of course Sharp's games were all in the Championship).

Marquis's combination of goalscoring and line-leading is up there with the best I've seen in my time as a Rovers fan. I'm struggling to think of any other striker who put in so much of a shift and still had such a good scoring record. It's like a combination of Chris Brown line leading and better than Heffernan goal scoring rate. You've probably got to go back to Big Bren to find someone to match that.

Aye. It's interesting though that we've never had a very good goalscorer for an extended period of time. It'd be grand to keep Marquis for another 3-4 years and see him getting close to 100 goals for us.

He is indeed 3rd BST, but some figures (especially Paul Green) seem slightly wrong. The figures I have (all comps in Brackets):

Coppinger 56 (65)
Sharp 44 (45)
Marquis 37 (38)
Heffernan 36 (54)
Hayter 33 (39)
Brown 29 (33)
McIndoe 28 (35)
Blundell 27 (31)
Green 25 (27) (I think your figure may include Conference)

The others seem right but you have forgotten the wonderfully gifted in training Lewis Guy with 18 (24), and Tommy Rowe 18 (23)

Yep, I did incorrectly include Green's Conference goals. I never thought of Tommy Rowe and I've done my best to scrub most memories of Guy from my mind, barring his goal at Derby and that sublime touch to Heffernan against Villa. Ta for the correction on Heffernan's goals.

Another thing I always think with Marquis is how it was a bit unexpected that he quickly came to the fore as our main striker. When he was signed I and many others believed he was signed as the support striker for Williams, but he soon proved capable of being an excellent out-and-out goalscorer as well. Williams' injuries haven't helped of course, but it was a pleasant surprise.

BST - there was one goal scored by Heffernan at Swindon in 2005-06 which was given to McCormack in many official outlets. There was no doubt whatsever it was a Heffernan goal and as far as I know club records also give it to him - certainly the definitive club history book by Tony Bluff has it as Heff's goal.

I thought it was W5 D5 L0 before last night.

Gaz, that’s a big difference to Dutch Uncles tally, but it’s more like the one that I had expected.

Actually not that far off. I put the stats from Rovers point of view, W2, D4, L4

Gaz was looking from Grayson's point of view, (W5, D5, L0) and not including last night, and maybe not including the FA Cup tie. That would make it W5, D5, L0 versus W4, D4 , L0.
