Group of Death.
Group D maybe?
Group E?
-
That FIFA song they always used to play before the national anthems.
Someone did mention group of death in one of the early games and said how Russia's group was probably the polar opposite.

Scotland up next on ITV
Wey-hey!
In the build up to this WC, I watched a YouTube video of ITV footage from Argentina 78. They actually thought Scotland were going to win it.

They think it's all over...

Ha! They just used THAT clip.

China and the USA will both win it before ever Scotland do - and more than likely England too ! (That is not strictly an answer to the OP - I accept that - just a response to the post above)

And that’s Englands place in the knock out stages confirmed

Wait until Sunday afternoon for that one then.

I haven't heard a Mexican Wave yet.

goalllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll !!!!!!!!
or Messi has scored
-
With Germany, Brazil and Argentina all struggling it's turning out to be less predictable this time. One late goal to snatch a win against a mediocre side hardly makes England world beaters, but we can hope. C'mon England! Another win on Sunday will raise hopes.

I watched "Scotland 78: A Love Story" on BBC iPlayer last week (it's still available) and found it a really good watch with interviews from fans and players and Ally MacLeod's family. Being born in 1980 and getting into football in the late 80's I'd always laughed at the short story of Scotland saying they were going to win it but the programme does raise the point that at the time they had some great players who were succeeding in Europe for Liverpool and Ipswich. Sadly they were completely unprepared for the tournament...!
BBC article about it too:

(Off topic slightly I know but a decent documentary)

Outstanding play by Argentina.

My favourite thought about WC78.
Think what effect this moment had on all your lives.

If Clive Thomas hadn’t been such an arrogant prick, and had allowed that goal to stand, this is the alternative branch of history that we’d have experienced.
1) Brazil would have won their 1st Round group.
2) Brazil and Argentina would have been in different 2nd round groups.
3) Argentina would not have been able to eliminate Brazil in R2, as they did, by bribing the Peruvian Govt to put pressure on Peru to let Argentina win by a hatful and therefore pip Brazil on GD.[1]
4) Brazil would have beaten Argentina in the final.
5) Without the nationalistic fervour of a World Cup win, General Galtieri’s fascist junta would have collapsed and been replaced by a democratic moderate...
6) ...who wouldn’t have invaded the Falklands.
7) So, Maggie Thatcher wouldn’t have had her own nationalistic boost to drag her from miles behind in the opinion polls.
8) Meaning that a coalition of Labour and the SDP would have won the 1983 Election.
9) So the Miners’ Strike would never have happened.
10) And all the pits would still be open.
There you have it. The economy of Doncaster was destroyed because of a preening, arrogant get from Wales with a whistle.

And England are out of the world cup

BST
I like it, but Jorge Videla was in charge of the Junta in 1978. Galtieri didn't become President until 1981.
While losing the World Cup final to Brazil would have been a huge blow to the Junta I doubt it would have led to their collapse. Although it might have forced them into foreign adventures earlier.
Anyway, I'm not convinced that the 1978 Brazil side was that good (I saw them play England at Wembley just before the WC and they spent most of the time trying to kick us off the park.) Also I think the ref in the final was, shall we say, influenced!
-
Good points TRB.
That Brazil side wasn’t the best for sure. They werevpoor in the first round but they improved in the later stages. They were good enough to beat decent Poland and Peru sides comfortably and hold Argentina in the Round 2 group, then beat a very good Italy in the 3rd place match.

On paper, Saudi Arabia are the better team.

Why, is Maradonna playing?
-
Glenn Hoddle saying anything worth listening to.
Yeah, but the emphasis was on THIS World Cup.
At least Hoddle hasn’t questioned whether the Argentinians and Germans did something bad in a previous life.

have to disagree on point 10

So I've just upset a Scottish family member by asking how they're getting on in group L. f**k em.
-
We have just come back from a couple of days in Market Harborough. A pub there had a board outside saying "Free beer during World Cup Games, see other side of board for details".
On the other side it said "Free beer during all games involving, Scotland, Wales and Ireland".
Funnily enough the two windows directly above were both cracked so it must have touched a nerve.
-
"Wer'e on the march with Allies army, wer'e all going the Argentine, and we'll really shake em up" you all know the rest..am now going onto the BBC I -player...for a laugh...
-
I’m trying to remember the words Ian.
Got it!
“And we’ll really shake em up
Peru, Iran, we’ll f**k it up.”

I watched our 1966 World Cup triumph in Market Harborough, Idler; lovely place, or at least it was back then.

Maybe at 7a you could have said "and there would not have been a totally unnecessary loss of life on both sides - including those on the Belgrano" but otherwise a great analysis lol
