Post by: StocktonRover on August 13, 2017, 12:05:50 am
Just watching MOTD and am wondering what the hell the "expected goals" stat is all about and how they have arrived at a figure.?

I read something about this the other day. I think they analysed thousands of chances and saw how many were scored/missed from various positions to come up with a likelihood of someone scoring from a given position (so from half a yard out 99.99% chance of scoring but from 35 yards more like 5% for example). I'll see if I can find the article

It's all b*llocks isn't it? The beauty of the game is often in its unpredictability...

It's how bookmakers create the model for pricing up football matches. It's very very accurate. Using statistics is the way all football recruitment will be done in the future. Brentford, Fulham and Huddersfield are three teams that largely use these kind of models at the minute and they are doing very well with it.

The way political parties use statistics should be enough to put anybody off.
TWO or three parties have the same figures but read them differently to come up with completely opposite facts.

MOTD, Lineker and his boring chronies are shite. What used to be a cracking watch has been taken over by analysis delivered by so called 'experts' and has become a talking shop rather than doing what it was set up to do - giving us football to watch. If you took out all the discussion, analysis, interviews (usually with managers and players who can say nothing but the obvious), replays and incessant clips of the crowd and managers throwing a wobbly the actual football would barely come to about 15 minutes in every hour. Time for a change. Or a boycott.

Good thing nobody forces you at gun point to watch it then, eh?

MOTD does a job for me. It shows enough of the prem league to keep me informed without me giving a penny to sky.
Whilst it has more filler than I'd prefer, it serves its purpose.

MOTD is best watched on a Sunday morning after being recorded on Saturday night, that way you can fast forward through the crap that the so called experts spout.

They got one stat wrong in the Southampton v Swansea game.
Linaker said that Swansea failed to have a shot on target but I remember their young striker having one on target blocked by a defender after a fantastic turn in the box.

I think they can only show 7 minutes of each game. Hence the padding out with chat.

Someone's looked at the first 3 league games of League One and were looking decent in both halves for expected goals.
