Last night, the wife and I watched Pulp Fiction for the first time (I know), and that is up there with one of the best.
A couple of my other favourites are; Hacksaw Ridge, The Pursuit of Happyness.
What are your favourite films? Any suggestions would be appreciated. :)
-
The On The Buses trilogy.
-
Kes
-
Blade Runner 2049 is the best film I've seen released in the last decade. Better than the original. In 50 years we'll look on it as an all time classic.
-
Dances with Wolves, Shawshank Redemption, Forest Gump, Kiss the Girls.
-
The Graduate
The Sting
Little Big Man
Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid
Don't Look Back
-
Call north side 777
The searchers
Murder in the first
The outlaw josie Wales
-
Road to Perdition
LA Confidential
Some Like It Hot
and something slightly left field
All of Me
Into the Night
-
This Is Spinal Tap
Life Of Brian
Jaws
A Hard Days Night
The Blues Brothers
The Italian Job
-
Kes
Whatever Happened To Baby Jane
Marvellous
-
As mentioned before...my dad in law Bob played the headmaster in Kes.
Mrs Toes who was 14 at the time watched the Brian Glover footie bit being filmed. Said it took all day.
.
-
American History X.
All time favourite film.
-
Evita. The best stage musical to movie adaptation there is. Les Mis could have taken it's crown if (a) the director hadn't insisted on the cast singing live, which led to some decidedly dodgy performances, and (b) if someone else had played Javert. Russell Crowe can act. Russell Crowe is a passable singer. But he's not able to do both at the same time.

The Disaster Artist ,strange but very funny and has a cult following

Do you mean The Room? The Disaster Artist tells the story behind the making of that film, and is worth a watch.
-
Shane Meadows films are worth checking out if you haven't seen them.
I particularly enjoyed TwentyFourSeven and Dead Mans Shoes.

I thought the idea of making a sequel to Bladerunner was a very bad one but actually it turned out to be pretty good. It didn't do so well at the box office so hopefully they will leave it at that.
For me though the best Sci Fi movie of recent years has been Ex Machina. Definitely worth seeing.

That was also great, I second Ex Machina. Anything Alex Garland does goes over great with me. Annihilation on Netflix and Devs (a series, not a film) on iPlayer are worth watching if you liked Ex Machina.
-
Another vote for Ex Machina. Bit of a slow one to begin with IIRC but it's worth sticking with.
Watched Annihilation a couple of days ago, it's a bit weird but it's an interesting concept. Helps that it has Natalie Portman in.

The Graduate
The Sting
Butch Cassidy etc
Life of Brian
Jaws

As for favourite ?
Goal - World Cup 66
Coming to America
Trading Places
Eddie Murphy of course for last 2 and I tried to watch Beverly Hills cop and couldnt stand it as every 2nd word seemed to be f*** f*****d or f******g - but Coming to America I even have saved on my system and I thought "Good morning America" answer "F*** you" "yes and F**k you too" was excusable as it was funny
I think I would be a laugh at parties but dont know as I cant get to any !
Last time I went to a cinema I was attracted by the hype - Independence Day - and it was poor but from what I remember Trump could easily have played the President !
-
The good the bad and the ugly
Life of Brian
Brief Encounter
My top 3 films..
-
Yknow what Wolfie, it wouldn't have occurred to me right away but I think Trading Places is one of my favourite films too.
I love how it gives the audience a short education about what's going on in the stock market. And how Winthorpe goes from being Mr country club with his cricket sweater draped over his shoulders to being a lairy drunken bum in a Santa suit.
-
Ant film with Jamie Lee Curtis in is on my watch list
-
A stylish film people might have missed is Drive.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sY1TLgqfjvw
It's a gangster movie with a love story in it and a cool synth wave soundtrack. Worth checking out.
-
Interstellar
-
True Romance
Pulp Fiction
Just to see the cameos by the great Christopher Walken.
-
Interstellar
That is a frustrating film. As an homage to 2001 it should have been great but for me Chris Nolan messed it up.
When it was released they made a big thing about the accuracy of the physics and claimed everything in the film was to the best of our knowledge theoretically possible. They even hired Kip Thorne, one of the few people in the world who could talk shop with Stephen Hawkins to oversee it. And they still made glaring errors!
For instance, at the start of the film they send the space mission out to save the world. To get all the kit out of the Earth's atmosphere they need an Apollo 11 style launcher, tons of fuel, all that. Later on though, they visit a planet with more gravity than Earth. All it takes to fly down and in a little helicopter size thing, mooch around, take off to avoid a massive tsunami and fly off into outer space powered by a couple of engines the size of hairdryers.
Either gravity is a real obstacle or it isn't. And they never convincingly explain why it has to be a manned mission instead of a remote one.
All these things spoil the film a bit for me.

As a piece of cinema though, there's little else to match it. Blew me away quite literally on an IMAX screen. How Hans Zimmer didn't win an Oscar for the score is still a mystery.
-
If you want a great Chris Nolan cinematic experience with a full on Hans Zimmer soundtrack, then I think Dunkirk is better.
-
Lost Horizon (1937)
And Soon the Darkness (1970)
Brief Encounter (1945)
Robbery (1967)
The Ipcress File (1965)
Some great old films shown on Talking Pictures Freeview channel 81.
-
Ant film with Jamie Lee Curtis in is on my watch list
Bugs ?
-
If you're after sci fi to get the noggin jogging I can recommend Arrival. Very slow but very, very well done. The sort of film you'll think about for ages after it's finished.
-
A couple of excellent Sci-Fi/Superhero comedies are Galaxy Quest and Mystery Men.
-
Gran Torino.
-
One that always comes to mind when people ask me for a favourite is Lucky Number Slevin.
It has mixed reviews but I really like the story and dialogue/characters.
On the space theme I really enjoyed The Martian...although my favourite bit was probably when my wife asked if it was based on a true story. I'll never let her live that one down.
-
Happiness
-
I watched this the other week and thought it was average at best.
Does Clint Eastwood always speak through gritted teeth?
Gran Torino.

Snatch..
Great film!

Really? Fair enough!
He always speaks with a bit of a growl but it was intensified for this particular role.
Would thoroughly recommend American History X if you haven't seen it. It's on Netflix & the message the film portrays is outstanding. I champion it to anyone who'll listen.
One of the best endings, in my opinion.
-
The Good the Bad & The Ugly
Dirty Harry
Forest Gump
Full Monty
Shawshank Redemption
Silence of the Lambs

Breaking Bad is the best TV show I have ever seen. I can't believe there's people who have never seen it! At least you have, even if you are 8 years late haha.
Better Call Saul is brilliant, too. That episode in the last series where Jimmy and Mike are walking through the desert was so simple, but very, very good.
Started Ozark twice and got as far as halfway through season 2, but just didn't stick with it.
Thanks for the other 2 suggestions, you obviously know what you're about being a Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fan! :) :woohoo:

Absolutely! I have watched it at least 4 times from start to finish. Love it!
Ozymandias is an outstanding episode. Also, a big fan of Face Off - that left me gobsmacked. Dead Freight is a favourite, too.

I was numb after watching Ozymandias. TV doesn't get any better.
-
Game of Thrones up to season 4.
Wouldn't bother after that.
-
Dead Mans Shoes as someone mentioned above is really good budget UK film. Paddy Considine is terrifying in it.
-
Boxed set ?
The Night of .... First episode really gripped me (definition ? I stayed awake) and I more or less could not stop watching it. Mostly 10 am onwards 2 or 3 at a time
Anyone like it or indeed hate it ?

Didn’t particularly enjoy El Camino, felt like nothing really happened. I know some say that Breaking Bad was a slow starter but I never really felt like that, El Camino on the other hand never really gripped me. Might be because the last series of Breaking Bad finished so strongly - Ozymandias as mentioned was incredible but the last episode was also probably the best finish to a series that I’ve ever seen.
-
Not even heard of breaking bad, am I the only person.
-
No
-
It’s a tv series..
-
Only one of the highest rated of all time? 9.5 on imdb... But not for everyone...
-
El Camino was good but not great I felt. The acting was great and I did enjoy the story but it just felt unnecessary. I was perfectly happy with how Breaking Bad ended and I didn't need all this extra stuff tacked on.
Better Call Saul is a different matter, that show is on par with BB for me. Fantastic stuff.
-
Do we think Walt died then?
What a character Mike Ehrmantraut is.
-
I believe there was a line in El Camino that confirmed he died, on a news report or something. Think it robs the story of something if he survives anyway, I can't really explain it.
Mike is great, and he's even better in BCS I reckon.

Just hope he doesn't check out before they film the last series.

Now you mention it, I seem to remember such a scene. Rest In Peace, Walter White.
I agree, arguably the best character in BCS.

Has anyone ever seen Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri?
It was on Film 4 last night so we recorded it and are watching later.
-
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, child snatcher was scary and Benny Hill was great as the toymaker. I saw the fim at the Odeon (Gaumont?) back in the day and the film stopped for an intermission for icecream as Chitty went off the cliff only for it to start flying when the film restarted, such relief :woohoo: :woohoo:

I found an on demand service I'd never heard of called Pluto TV, online and through Virgin TV's Apps. It has some great older films on, I'm currently watching Capricorn One, great film.

Great film. I don't know if you've seen In Bruges or Seven Psychopaths or any other Martin McDonagh films but if you liked them you'll like this.

Thanks. I haven't, but Seven Psychopaths is on my list and I believe it is available on Netflix? I will also bear In Bruges in mind.
I'm reading some good reviews on Three Billboards. Looking forward to it.
-
The first season of True Detective is outstanding. Matthew Mcconaughey is unreal.
Not so keen on seasons 2 and 3.
-
I quite liked season 3 as well even though it wasn't a patch on S1. Season 2 did nowt for me though, not great. Although the Leonard Cohen song on the titles was good.

For anyone interested and after a decent film; we watched this on Friday night and it was brilliant. Well worth a couple of hours of your time, IMO.

Seeing as we've skewed into series rather than just films, I'm currently most of the way through S2 of The Umbrella Academy. Really enjoyed it but I think you have to be a particular kind of person to like it. Dysfunctional family of superheroes trying to stop the apocalypse. The Boyz is great too, staying on the superhero genre, if you're comfortable with graphic violence.
-
Totally agree with everything said about Breaking Bad. Better Call Saul is also brilliant.
I also enjoyed House of Cards, although the last season (without Kevin Spacey) was awful.
-
Well if we are talking tv the re-runs of Cheers are worth watching. I still chuckle at them
-
Recently watched Designated Survivor. Thought it was really good, though the third season (incidentally, when Netflix picked it up) is a bit SJW-y compared to the rest of it and not as good as the first two. Shame they cancelled it as there was mileage in a fourth season.
-

It seems True Detective, Designated Survivor and House of Cards are popular, too.
I'm currently enjoying Ackley Bridge on Netflix  :silly: a bit cringey, but easy watching at the same time.

I've tried with Umbrella Academy but failed to be enthralled with it. The Boyz though is a different kettle of fish, found it to be particularly absorbing.
If we are talking series rather than films can I throw into the mix a couple of others? The Mandalorian has been excellent, and nobody seems to have mentioned Sons of Anarchy or Black Mirror either.
-
We never watched broadchurch when it was on telly but only series one has been on catch up services so far..

Looks like we've moved onto series haha. We have watched the majority of Black Mirror and really like it. It's very different and makes you think.
Never seen Sons of Anarchy! Heard many good things about it. Is there 7 seasons?
Any Game Of Thrones fans about? Is that worth my time?
-
I loved Utopia on TV a few years ago and its on Amazon Prime now. A US re-make is on there too, its watchable but UK version wipes the floor with it. Very current too, virus, pandemics, conspiracy.

Better to watch without reading the books first as they vary too much.

If we’re talking box sets now .
If you’re into gritty police and life in a big city type series, I can thoroughly recommend The Wire.
I’ve watched it twice now , simply American tv at it’s very best.
-
Interesting how easily this discussion has slipped from big screen movies to TV serials.
With the way things are going with the cinema industry I wonder how much of a future big screen films have? The big studios are probably better off investing in open ended TV series made for streaming, rather than blockbuster features. Whatever, That's definitely the case whilst the virus is on.

The wife and I started GOT a couple of years ago and we were enjoying it. We watched it hungover once and a horses head got chopped off so that's when we decided to stop with it. Maybe I just need to man up and get it watched on Sky Boxsets!

Peaky Blinders - Gripping from start to finish. Full of brilliant characters.
-
Back on the film theme, and for those music fans amongst us, my favourite would be 'Almost Famous'.
-
Inheritance, with Simon Pegg. It's on Netflix.

Going back to series; last few nights I have watched the Top Gear specials: Patagonia, Burma and Africa (where they locate the source of the Nile). Brilliant TV, imo.

Ohh, that reminds me; Uncut Gems on Netflix is decent. Not the Adam Sandler you'd expect.

So, was in the mood for a film yesterday afternoon, decided to watch 1922 based on the Stephen King novela - complete waste of 1 hour 45 minutes. I'm assuming the book is a lot better.
-
Good one on BBC over the weekend - still available on iPlayer.
Original 1962 version of The Manchurian Candidate. Absolute classic.

Very good. Thanks for that.
Michael Caine the one with his name beginning with a C of course as i don’t think Harry or Herbie are quite in the same league as actors, is one of the most iconic actors of all time imo.
They threw the mould away when they made him.

Not a lot of people know that
Sorry Wolf I get it now. I am not very quick on the uptake.
I do not wake up properly until after about 9-30

Sometimes :)

Not going well for me recently: I put Will Smith's Seven Pounds on earlier - turned off after an hour.

Mrs T is keen on The Crown.
Watched the first episode of the new series with her last night.
What a load of tosh.
-
Hotel Mumbai. Excellent film.
Hotel Rwanda is good an all. Not quite the same theme...

I watched a film on Channel 4 catch-up on Monday called The Ritual. Is a British horror and had quite a few twists and turns - enjoyed it mostly and it filled a couple of hours.

I'll keep an eye out!
Another one for the pile; Bronson!
Watched it for the first time in ages last night. Tom Hardy is outstanding. Forgot how good it was.

Been watching the Mandalorian lately. Very good stuff, slightly grittier than regular Star Wars, with a bit of old spaghetti western influence. Good popcorn show if you want something easy to watch with the kids.

I'm a massive Star Wars fan and the Mandalorian is great after the new films lost their way a bit. Really gets the feel and aesthetic of the original films and expands the universe nicely, definitely drawing on Samurai/Western tropes.
Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have hit the spot and teamed up with some talented guest directors. Some interesting filmmaking techniques too, effectively using studios with massive floor to ceiling screens all round them displaying the background rather than filming on location or against green screen.

'Call My Agent' on Netflix.
English subtitled, French comedy about a talent agency. Has a real French actor in every episode (most of whom I've never heard of), generally taking the piss out of themselves.
3 series of 6 x one hour(ish) episodes.
Binge watched the lot over a week.

The wife and I started Modern Family on Netflix last week and we are binge watching at every opportunity. Funny and easy watching - I would also say it gets better.
It's worth watching for Sofia Vergara alone!

I must admit it blew my mind when I learned the whole thing was made on a sound stage. You can't tell at all, it's very subtle.

Just finished the whole set of Better Call Saul.. didn’t realise there is another series due - Covid pending - thought it ended with too much of a plot gap to Breaking Bad..

Brilliant watch. I love it, along with Breaking Bad. I had forgotten about the new series, actually, but as you say, CV-19 pending - so could be a while. I know what you mean about the ending....

Has anyone watched The Undoing on Sky Atlantic?
We didn't watch it when it was on TV, but have tried several times tonight to download it from Sky on demand, with no success.
Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

Are you trying to watch a HD channel version but you do t have that subscription maybe.?

Another vote for The Mandalorian here. Last week's episode with Ahsoka had me beside myself. Utterly brilliant. It's a triumph.
My top 5 films are :
SW: The Empire Strikes Back
SW : A New Hope
Raiders of The Lost Ark
Jaws
The Thing
I could watch any one of those at any time of day or night. Actually, I might slip the blu-ray of The Thing on later (it's almost a Christmas movie too).
Given the news of Eliot Page in the past couple of days, watch him in Hard Candy if you haven't seen it. It's superb.
I'm halfway through series 2 of The Boys on Amazon Prine and really enjoying that at the moment.

The thing is one of my absolute favourite films ever. It's pretty much perfect.
It's childish but I always get a chuckle out of the German name:

Sorry, just seen this. We have tried downloading in standard format and unfortunately the download fails.

Keep trying..

Ronin
Mad Dog & Glory
The Bourne Identity
The Equaliser (Denzil Washington)
Loche

Just watched The Fundamentals of Caring. Would recommend.
-
One that not many have watched Apocalypto
-
I've just gone back and watched the full run of Misfits. It starts of mental and gets more ludicrous as the story goes on, but I find the characters really funny and it's an easy watch.

Managed to get this sorted last night after a week or so of forgetting about it. We're halfway through and will probably finish it tonight. Very good so far. Would recommend.
-
'Far From Men' watched this 2014 French film last night and can highly recommend it.
Set in Algeria in the 50s
Added: Nick Cave did the sound track

I'm going back to the 90s at the minute and watching all of the Highlander series. The difference between what was allowed on TV back then when rated as a 15/16+ and what is produced these days in similar age ratings is striking.
-
Not a film........ but just finished watching the whole series of The Serpent on BBC iPlayer - really enjoyed it.

We're 2 episodes in. First episode was good, not so sure on the second, but will stick with it.

Just having a re-run of Twin Peaks from the very beginning. Just as good as I remember, weird and wonderful!! Possibly the best thing tv as ever produced!

How weird - so are we! Finished the original series and just watched Fire Walk With Me last night. Such a brilliant, underrated film, a lot of people really hate it but I think it's fantastic. About to start the 3rd series tonight, I haven't seen it since it first came out so I'm looking forward to it.

David Lynch is a genius.
