Weird!
-
Loan coming in?
-
Wonder who it is we have lined up because must be something agreed or on verge of if Lawlor gone.
-
Weird!
Not really, he's not our first choice keeper and his contact runs for another 12 months. Plus he lives out that way too.
-
Would that take us to the end of Lawler's contact?
Edit - just seen SM's post above. Yes it does

Alex Palmer was linked on those dodgy Twitter pages. Maybe there's truth in the link! He'd be a decent signing.
-
Yeah you'd think we have someone coming in. Just hope it's someone close to Dieng's standard!
How does this work with the salary cap, then? If you loan a player out for the season, does that give you wiggle room in the wage cap? Or are they still considered fully on the books in case the loan ends prematurely?
-
Having Dieng last season really showed up Lawlors shortcomings & the need for us to get a better keeper - I used to ger shouted at when I said I preferred Marosi over Lawlor but it didn’t change my opinion !

I was of the same opinion regarding Marosi and Lawler

Loan players don't have their wage included. It goes on to the host club as long as that loan player is over 21.

Great minds filo

Ah so when we loan Palmer it'll be on our books and as part of the our cap? ;)
-
I always preferred Marko as well, Cov fans can't understand why we let him go.
-
SM, correction on that statement ‘he wasn’t our first team keeper’?
He, surely, would have been in front of Jones?

Not seen anything of him but looking at Plymouth forum they were massive fans of him.

Just noticed that young Alex is a WBA player, so there’s a link!

I wasn't a fan of either Marko or Lawlor to be honest. Makes sense if Palmer was at WBA

No catching you with your pants down SM....... not even a little tease...?

Such an odd one with Marko. Coventry mates rave about him as one of the best keepers they have ever had but he never filled me with that much confidence. Would have chosen Dieng over him all day long.
-

Yep, me too, Marosi was the better keeper.
-
Me too however the two games against Charlton showcased Markos failings, Seny was a different level.

who is our 1st choice
-
We only have Jones, currently!
-
Good decision, he’s not up to the standard required unfortunately
-
Lawlor lost his place in the team to Marosi and then to Dieng so it's no surprise. Marosi has proven those of us who said he was better right so far, he will be a Championship keeper in 2020/21 and Lawlor a League 2 goalie.
Good luck to him but I think it was clear his time with us was done. Looking forward to seeing who comes in although it would not surprise me if Jones won the shirt this season.
-
Weird!
will he be allowed to play against Rovers in the F a cup ?
-
Weird!
No. We might need him in the final.😉

I always felt Lawlor had potential but he just couldn’t seem to find the confidence to make use of his frame and athleticism by coming for crosses and commanding his box. He was a decent reactionary shot stopper but almost glued to his line when the ball came across and it cost us so many times. Sadly there was never any sign of that changing with coaching.
Marosi was a better all round keeper. Dieng was in another league entirely.

I agree with that, he also preferred punching when it was easier to catch

Oldham’s first choice keeper is Gary Woods
-
Oldham’s first choice keeper is Gary Woods
The Gary Woods of can’t save long distant shots fame? 😂
-
Both made to many mistakes
-
Glad it's sorted that out then. Lawlor is a panic merchant and has zero calming influence. Dieng was the opposite and was one of the best we've ever had if not the best in modern times. Marko was somewhere in between but good enough for me but he needed to get away to find a first team no 1 spot.
-
Marko needed to command his box better and the number one rule for a goalkeeper is never change your mind ie hesitate, that’s why I never rated him , being able to pull a fine save off now and again does outweigh the mistakes and hesitations that cost us goals

He commanded his box far better than Lawler, one is playing in the Championship next season, the other in L2, thats says it all realley

I think it was Ben Smith who was regularly beaten from distance. Gary Woods was just generally not very good! Think it was a testament to how good that defence in front of him was that he has a League One winners medal.

Hasn't Bywater been released?

Marko was our first choice in his last season here.

I can't ever remember you being our first choice keeper mate.

Haha, that will teach me to rush a post because my tea is ready.
Amended now Steve.

Spot on from what I have read on this thread - but you could also have included " that Jones isnt up to standard" (from Reply #25)
-
We have struggled for best part of a decade to find a long term keeper solution. We kept Sullivan playing well in to retirement and aside from the good loans (Johnstone, Button, etc) we have never had a reliable and solid keeper. Shame really.
-
Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere but how do loans fit in with the salary cap?
Say Lawlor is paid £2k a week and Oldham are paying half of that, would £1k count towards our salary cap and the £1k towards theirs? And what if there was no contribution to the wages, just a loan fee - would that be a way to circumvent the cap?

For 2020/21 ONLY - Any Player not included in the Club’s Squad List is also excluded from the Club’s Squad Salary Cap Calculation.

Thanks, presumably any wage contribution for loan players (part of the squad list) is therefore counted.
Just looked on the EFL website and it says “ any income generated from players going out on loan is deducted from the Club’s Salary Cap calculation“ - that doesn’t really make sense to me as you’re effectively benefitting twice.
-

You would think that a combination of coaching and continuous practice would strengthen such a fundamental skill as taking crosses safely and. with authority ..and maybe strength of mind is missing often ( as Copps points out ) ..training the mind .
-
I watched Lawlor for the entire time he was here, and soon came to the conclusion he could make the most fantastic reaction save but basically was a bollock a game merchant.
I watched Dieng for half a game and wrote on here he was head and shoulders a better keeper and should be first choice.
Some on here disagreed and had a go for me for saying so,

Marko all day long for me!!

We were caught up comparing Marosi and Lawlor, we then got Dieng and it showed that both were way below his standard

Was always a weak spot and a new keeper was needed. Better keep and we beat Charlton at the Valley.
-
Play Dieng from the start last season and we are probably in the play offs and still in the league cup.
-
Nickdrfc so your saying I’m right he never commanded his box 🤣
-
The thing with Dieng is that he was a Championship level keeper but needing match experience - the fit with us was perfect. The ideal is someone similar from the start of next season.
Jones, it depends at what level his sights are set. For me, he has to work his socks off this season, and as number two here he can learn quality in technique and mental aptitude rather than just piling on the match experience that he'd get in the Conference or below.
-
Don’t suppose anyone is thinking that Jk es might have impressed DM enough to warrant a start and maybe be first Choice
Never seen him in a game but I always thought he looked decent warming up
I know this is not the same as a game. It would be an interesting scenario
-
He might, but we still need a no 2..
-
Agreed.
Joe Hart. He’s not going anywhere fast
-
Why not use the youth as prime back up? A number two is rarely used in a game, and if the number 1 is injured, there's usually a reasonable loan option that can be brought in if needed. This would certainly save the £s and give more slack to bring in that fancy striker.
-
He might, but we still need a no 2..
I'm thinking exactly the same IDM, and I honestly can't see DM bringing a loan in to be no 2.
Also, a club loaning us a keeper would expect him to get regular game time, as with Dieng last season.
-
I would think we must have some irons on the fire, to let Lawlor go..
-
Seen an article on NewsNow regarding a certain young keeper at ManU, who played against us last season.Kovar?
