Sunderland look now to be on a mission, and at last are showing something like the form most expect of a team of their standing. I always say we are great at getting struggling teams back on the straight and narrow, and it certainly looks like we did the trick with losing at the Keepmoat to them over the holiday period.
And who would bet that by Friday they have signed another four centre forwards, while we have had twenty or more supporters commit suicide because of our lack of signings before the game.
But that is how it is at the moment, we might have a signing by Friday, we might not, whatever we do this game is not going to be easy and we will just have to get on with it.
What changes can we make, well on the face of it probably none or at least very few. Ennis had his first poor game for us, hardly a reason
to drop him after one game, will Sadlier be fit probably, Coppinger to start or Gomes probably the most likely change to start the game.
Like Coventry yesterday they employed the high press well against us at the Keepmoat with yesterdays scorer and our old loan player Lynden Gooch scoring the winner.
Ozturk will do his usual man handling, and might even catch the ball this time, as he seems to be able to do anything up to manslaughter before getting a red card against us, but with players like Lafferty, Lynch, Power, and McGuire plus others they should be a top side at this level.
Can we get our first ever league fixture win this Friday?
Will we have the option of a new signing or even signings by Friday?
How will you be viewing? TV or at the game?
If you go to the pub before the game, will you understand the local chatter?
Lots to discuss about this game, lot's to look forward to at a great ground, against a good team, please have your say.

Well I sincerely hope you put in a better performance up there than you did last season .
With Sunderland breathing down our necks at the time I wasn't amused given you'd given us two significantly hard games last season .
-
We tried to hit diagonal balls over the top of two of the biggest full backs in the league. Never changed the tactic once. Got what we deserved.

Aye Sunderland away really was a shocker. For all the good we had last year we were rubbish in a fair few games.
I'm going to this one, tough game and they did a job on us at home this year. Even their 3rd 4th choice striker would start for us, that's our problem.
-
This will be my first away game of the season (since Tranmere was called off), so I hope we play better than in the last two meetings with Sunderland. I hope we have a couple of new faces in too but most of all I just hope our confidence isn't knocked by yesterday's result. Will be a fascinating encounter.
-
I didn't think that Sunderland could resist it until next week, not exactly a centre forward , but a decent experienced defender Bailey Wright, signed on loan from Bristol City.
I wonder if he had to go through a training session showing how good he was at using his arms man handling players, and catching the ball above his head accidentally before they signed him.
-
First league game of the season. Got a good feeling about it.
-
Yes, somebody was on here on Saturday with a good feeling about the Coventry game.

I think this game will be won on tactics surprisingly. I agree that we just have not turned up once when playing Sunderland. I'm hoping that DM gets the tactics spot on like he did for Peterborough and Bristol. On paper it's a home banker for Sunderland but we owe them one and need to prove we're not a push over. Fingers crossed for a shock result I think
-
Yes, somebody was on here on Saturday with a good feeling about the Coventry game.
Yep, that was me. And I imagine that Monkcaster’s feeling will have about as much of an impact on the game as mine did.

Tyke it would take an insane amount of effort to put in a worse performance than last season. We had some bad results last season but that was easily our poorest performance. Game plan fell apart and we got bullied.
To get anything out of Friday we have to combat the bullying and physicality that Sunderland have in midfield. If we stand up to them we have a chance. If we don’t then we lose to them again I’m afraid.
Our defence should, on its day, deal with what they have up front. Like wise so should they. A battle of centre midfield for me.
-
Well the ref likes dishing the cards https://www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk/news/2020/january/officials-confirmed-for-sunderland/
To be fair I thought he was excellent at St Andrews earlier in the season before being replaced by a complete numpty at half time
-
I hope the ref is strong enough to pick up on Mr Ozturk and his grappling method of defending.
He got away with it last season and again in the recent game at the KM.
-
Oh b*gger just realised he was ref against Fleetwood and what he allowed them to get away with
-
Yes its him https://www.drfc-vsc.co.uk/index.php?topic=273583.msg891568#msg891568 (https://www.drfc-vsc.co.uk/index.php?topic=273583.msg891568#msg891568)
Tyke was not happy at our capitulation at SOL but decisions went against us as nobody seems to have mentioned yet. Dont forget Marquis was brought down on the edge of their area and Woolmer waved play on and 15 seconds later we were one down for a start
Heres a part of what DRFCHound posted of the Ref (Woolmer) after that game
.......and on that last point, despite people saying the refs are not at fault for a poor team display, they do have a big impact on the outcome of games.
Had he given that free kick early on, Sunderland wouldn’t have gone up and scored as they did.
So the game starts differently.
Also If he had given the pen on Butler and we had scored to make it 2-1 with 20 minutes to play then we may have gone on to get a point.
Conjecture?
Obviously yes but poor officials do influence the way games turn out.
-
... and I put this (even mentioned Tyke by coincidence)
... and not just for the two Teams involved either. SAFC justifiably won yesterday as we were poor but as you say give the Marquis foul and it would have altered the game even if we shot over the Bar
Give the Butler Pen and if we score who knows 2 - 1 with 20 to go. Squeaky bum time for them and maybe an unlikely draw but it happens
So all other Teams are affected too - Barnsley and Pompey especially. SAFC now right on BFC tail thanks to those extra 2 points. Wonder what Tyke reckons. We still go on about the Dunk tackle and the Charlton abandonment and how our Season(s) were subsequently affected. So that could be what others will think - even though they are not playing their own "fate" is still altered. I realise this happens each week at every kind of ground but it needs sorting
Yesterday 2 keepers caught Balls in similar situations outside the area - one got a straight Red the other (Owl) got a yellow - NO CONSISTENCY.
The only time you see some kind of consistency is when Player takes shirt off and 99.9 % of them are awarded a Yellow Card - all other offences vary Ref to Ref and often vary within a Game by the Ref on duty
It stinks and should be fixed
-
Ozturk should have been sent off last season at SOL as well as this at the KM. He must be invisible to refs as they were on only ones in the stadium not to see his assault on Butler in the area and the catch at the KM.
If Sunderland are on their game as they were at the KM then they will be difficult to contain. We cannot switch off like we did when Gooch was left unmarked and, when we backed off the scorer v Coventry. Other than that, our defending has been excellent overall.
The passing has to be slick and we have to get some shots off. He who hesitates...
.
-
As much as I was baying for it at the time from the south stand, that hand ball sadly wasn’t a red card offence..
Unless you can argue two yellows for a double handball.!!
-

I agree with all of that, apart from the poorest performance of the season bit. That surely had to be at Luton, when we were dicked 0-4, and it should have been 0-10. That was just utter and total embarrassment.
-
We rarely seem to get the rub of the green from refs on the big stages and even when we have got good results, it's not often been due to a generous ref, having to do it the hard way. Even in the play off semi v Charlton the ref had a reasonable game until fate decided that he was under instructions to have the pennos taken at the Charlton end!
If we win on Friday, you can bet we'll have deserved every bit of it.
-
Ozturk should have been sent off last season at SOL He must be invisible to refs as they were on only ones in the stadium not to see his assault on Butler in the area and the catch at the KM.
True - he "rode" Andy Butler for 4 to 5 yards in what was a clear cut Penalty. The b****r gets away with murder
Your last post is also correct - reminds me of Boxing Matches where you have to knock out your opponent on their own patch / in their own Country because you will never win otherwise.
-
Hi SS – got to disagree on the most abject away performance. We were bad at Luton but they were doing well and at the top end of the table, so that 4-0 hurt but wasnt completely unfathomable. The worst was the Wimbledon away game who were at the bottom of league 1 and at the time heading for League 2. That was a truly miserable day. Absolute dog of a game.
-
As expected, DM seems up for it........
https://www.doncasterroversfc.co.uk/news/2020/january/moore-believes-his-side-will-rise-to-the-occasion-on-friday/
I think we have a decent record in evening games - maybe the atmosphere will help and you never know. I think most of us thought that we would get stuffed in the semi-final second leg at Charlton last year and we totally bossed the game...
Come on you hoops.... :scarf:
-
Pretty poor record on the idiot box in the North East.
Hartlepool & Middlesborough. Nightmare-ish.
More than ready to scran my words after tomorrow night!

Totally agree mate. Last 3 televised live games in the North East, Middlesborough 0-4; Hartlepool 1-2; Sunderland 0-2.
It wasn't just the results, the performances were garbage as well. Let's hope it changes tomorrow.

Christ. Somehow managed to forget about our shit show on the TV here last season.
I'm all for us ending this hoodoo tomorrow.
My last away game was Charlton in the play offs and I went with the same sort of feeling. We won on the night so I'd take that in a heartbeat!
Safe journey up, everyone.

Those results are the past.
Let’s have some positivity or there is no point in turning up.
It’s 11 v11
If we play as we are capable then we can get a result. A strong ref will be a big help.
-
They quickly sussed our 'play it out from the back' routine at the KM. They pressed hard and chased us down as soon as Dieng played it to a defender, forcing us into errors.
They will be waiting to see if we persist with that again tonight and will look to exploit it.
Their fans are behind the team again now so it will be a tough atmosphere for us.
I'm getting ready for my nerves to be jangling but you never know.
I just hope we do ourselves justice because we certainly haven't done against Sunderland last season or this.
Come on lads, let's give the Mackems a shock.
-
Kieran Sadler out due to concussion.

It’s a good job we have a massive squad then 😩

“It’s a big opportunity for Bingham then.”
The above is a possible quote from DM later today.

Love to see Watters start tonight, although I sense it’s going to be Bingham. I hope Bingham plays out of his skin mind!

Are we playing Darren Moore Bingo today....?
If so, can I pick "They are a strong team within this division"

Anyone know what the sky team is for tonight? Will it be heavily Sunderland biased?

I think Blair may get the nod tonight..
-
I’m hoping Blair has shown enough in training otherwise I have a feeling...It’s ‘Gomes’ time. :(
-
I am caught between a rock and a hard place over Ennis up front tonight. With the last few games V Sunderland in mind, whoever plays up front is going to get man handled from behind, and probably thrown about.
That is Ok if the referee clamps down on it, and Ennis can bring his flicks into play, and get away from his marker. If not the only alternative is Bingham who can use his body strength and pace.
It is a great call about Blair playing wide, and with Ennis, Bingham, Blair and Taylor we do have pace in the front three whatever the combination.
I would probably start Ennis and Bingham, with Matty to come on, Ennis or Bingham central? could be any.
-
We only play with one out n out striker usually
I’d go for
Taylor. Ennis. Blair.
-
I'll go with
Dieng,
Halliday, James, Anderson, Wright
Whiteman, Sheaf, Gomes,
Taylor, Ennis, Copps.
I just think he'll try to get a foothold in the game in midfield and stop them getting through us. The full backs will need to be on their metal as Sunderland like to get in behind and have the option of crossing for Wyke or cutting back for Maguire.
Just be disciplined for starters, o cheap free kicks, make it as difficult as possible for them and hope the get the crowd frustrated.
-
“Because of the bodies, we’ve not had a lot of bodies to play with”
“I’ve no news”
“ ... And long may it continue”
Can’t wait for the post match interview. Pure entertainment.

James on the left wing, 6 on the bench. Not looking too promising.

Although let’s be fair Amos has been in and around the first team squad bond on the bench quite a lot..

And how exactly does a YT ever have a chance if we don't let managers have them in the squad and see their presence as a sign of a weak squad?
-
It is a weak squad.
Of course it is
-
If whiteman and Sheaf allow that big area in front of our back four and front four to be filled with hungry Black cats ......we will get absolutely mullered, ...
Midfield is key tonight.......if we give one inch I will predicted ct a 4-0 drubbing..
But........I have been wrong before
-
More than matching them.. playing well.. just think if we had signed a decent striker or two in the past 4.5 months..
-

Honestly think we’ve got the best GK, CB and CM in the league! So frustrating we’ve nowt up front.
-
Whiteman said in his interview at the end the squad is looking very lightweight at the minute
-
It’s no secret is it, DM has said we need more players too..
-
Don’t understand your point?
I’ve not heard anyone from the club admit previously our squad is lightweight, and there’s many posters who still defend it.
I think it’s significant that he’s come out and said that

Which bit of DM saying we need to bring players in, in recent days, isn’t something coming from the club.?
-
He said that in the summer also.
He’s always saying we trying to bring players in,
Your captain saying the squad is lightweight is a different matter altogether

Explain yourself cocker instead of trying to be clever
-
Do you not think that Whiteman was saying that, to illustrate how good it was with the performance tonight, despite the thin squad.?
It’s bot an issue, there isn’t a conspiracy..
Getting that result tonight, and another clean sheet, feels as good as a win..
-
Explain yourself cocker instead of trying to be clever
It’s fairly clear - you said there had been nothing coming from the club, and I pointed out that DM has said we need players in, and recently.
Does DM not represent the club then.? f**k me, I only thought he is the manager.!!

Not suggesting it’s a conspiracy.
And no I dont think that’s why he was saying it

No, I think he was saying it because he’s as frustrated as most of the fans... I’m guessing a key reason for him signing a new contract was that he thought we would be pushing for promotion. We are only a few key players away from having a real chance but for some reason we can’t get the players signed

Ok Dickos, you win. You’re always right and your arguments are always fully justified..

IDM
I said nobody from the club has ever admitted the squad is lightweight.
Is that correct or not?
Moore saying he’s trying to bring players in isn’t the same thing.
So no it’s not fairly clear
-
Yes it is the same thing, even if the words aren’t exactly the same..
Thin squad means we need new players..
Looking for new players acknowledges we have a thin squad..
Clear enough to me..

Now Tom Anderson saying a few new additions would be welcomed with open arms

No, not at all
The squad could be great but Moore could still come out and say he’s trying to bring players in.
Someone admitting the squad is lightweight is different
-
Thought Gomes was great first half. Probably the best player on the pitch. Not involved enough in 2nd half. Maybe should have got Copps and Blair on a little earlier but to be fair, we were riding a storm on the 60 min mark so can understand why he delayed the subs.
-
Thought DM got it spot on tonight, with the players at his disposal.
Really looking forward to Tuesday after this game.!
-
30k there tonight apparently.....?

More I think about it, it's probably a back 3 with wing backs tonight
Hoden was pretty certain it's 4-2-3-1 with James at LW.
Hoden was wrong.
We clearly played a back three and wing backs.

You may as well talk to the wall.

James nowhere near the fullback / wingback position tonight. I find it incredible what people see or think they see at games lately.

Just got back and we played our usual formation.
James played in Sadlier position and John played left back with Gomes in Copps position.
So it was a fairly fluid 4-2-3-1 formation.
Just a word for Ben Sheaf tonight as he played a very mature game.
Quite outstanding & his best game by a mile in a Rovers shirt.
As good as Anderson was which was very good, Sheaf was my m.o.m.
Very solid performance from everyone. We completely ran the 1st half and in the second defended quite brilliantly when Sunderland stepped their game up.
More than deserved a point from that display and very proud to be a Rover tonight.

I would say that is the best I’ve seen from Gomes so far, and Sheaf looked back to his best.

Would agree, we said Sheaf too. He is a player improving rapidly now in that position.
Theres huge potential here, we all know what's preventing it.

More than deserved a point from that display and very proud to be a Rover tonight.
A very accurate post Campsall.
I would say that is the best I’ve seen from Gomes so far, and Sheaf looked back to his best.
Our usual formation is a 4-3-3 btw
Wouldn’t agree there. Usually 2 sitting in front of the back four (normally the two Bens) then a 3 behind a lone striker.

Proud of the lads tonight. An excellent, well-deserved point.
At last - we put in a performance against Sunderland!
Dieng was superb, so assured.
Anderson is a hero.
Gomes - his best game for us, he was everywhere in the first half.
Someone on Sunderland’s site is saying Sheaf is the best player he’s seen in this division.
-
I thought the teamwork was good with the right amount of niggle and harrying, we soaked up their attacks and we had a bit of luck. I'd imagine they will be thinking they had a bit of an off game but they couldn't deliver the final blow.
I missed the last 15min

Personally I thought it was a fluid 433. Notwithstanding the fact that a formation is essentially just something you stand in at kick off time. It’s more about the structure isn’t it?
-
I agree it was quite fluid and theres a lot of positives to take. Defence superb, passed it well just the one weakness we all know of. Sort that and Darren moore is the man to get us up the top. Huge week ahead.
Sheaf was excellent, amazing to see such vast improvement, says a lot about his attitude and the coaches we have.

One of our gutsiest displays away this season against a team full of confidence, and us needing to get something from the game to get a bit of confidence back when we play the top sides in the division.
Sheaf and Gomes had their best games for us this season up to press, and with Whiteman quietly getting on with things, and James surprisingly shoved into midfield, but doing well, we looked solid and combative.
The back four were solid behind them( are there really two better central defenders in this division) again getting a shut out.
Ennis and Taylor worked hard tackling back, both missing decent chances, the lack of scoring goals and penetration well documented, but nobody can point the finger about Lack of effort.
The management team really are tactically a step up from what we have had since SOD, proactive and meticulous in their approach to combating the other teams tactics, and the players keep their shape now lots better than at the start of the season, definitely progress being made, we need them to stay for the long haul.
One of those games, if you don't win, don't lose, which we didn't and got the point we deserved from the game, a well done from me.

This is from a Sunderland goal kick heading down to our left.

We clear as day played 4-2-3-1 like we have done all season.

I was away over the weekend so only got round to watching the game yesterday. Excellent performance 1st half as has been said, solid defence 2nd half. I haven't seen itmentioned anywhere hut did anyone else think that Power should have had a red for the tackle with Taylor just before half time? His right foot came right through on Taylor with no attempt to play the ball
-
Looked a 50/50 in real time..
-
They were also awarded the free kick
-
Watching on tellybox Taylor looks tohave pulled out of the tackle before Power whacks him, showed the incident from a couple of angles and one looks far worse than the other
-
Genuinely worrying about the “fans” on here thinking our usual formation is a 4-3-3. Especially when they constantly profess knowledge and put down all contributors with differing opinions.
May be that some of our “knowledgeable” posters on here aren’t actually attending matches quite as regularly as they make out...
-
It was defo 4-2-3-1, and I though Reece played well further forward.
