Line up: Woods, Quinn, Spurr, McCombe, Jones, Keegan, Harper, Bennett, Cotterill, Paynter, Hume.

Bench: Maxted, Husband, Griffin, Martis, Syers, Brown, Blake.

Expected more changes after Coventry debacle, although this is the sort of line-up that has worked away from home so far. No sign of Clingan- my guess is that he won't sign just to be a benchwarmer and is probably off somewhere else.

You'd hope after 2 weeks off the side is fighting fit and raring to go, no excuses about illness/injuries today! Need a performance, here's hoping that side can get it. Shame about Clingan, I'd agree with TRB that he seems to be hesitant to sign a new deal so we're not playing him. Shame as he'd be in over Keegan 11 times out of 10 for me.

Very disappointed with that line-up. Can't see any positives in Spurr going to full-back at the expense of Husband to make way for McCombe.

No pace at the back, same old lack of creativity in midfield, with the exception of the unpredictable schoolboy on the left.

Wish I could be more enthusiastic about it but I fear another backs to the wall performance.

Free Press also saying that all action is coming down their right wing. Can't imagine Bennett is providing much protection for Spurr. If this continues then you have to put Husband on I reckon. Bennett far too lightweight for a game like this.

Barely heard any of our midfielders mentioned yet.  If the roumour of a Wellens return has any truth in it, it can't happen soon enough.

Post by: MachoMadness on December 26, 2012, 03:40:15 pm
Well it sounds like they keep coming in waves, but are struggling to create genuine chances as usual. I'm not panicking just yet. They happened to score a good individual goal which it sounds like Woods fumbled, so it sounds like business as usual! Here's hoping we can bring on Brown and Syers to give us more options in midfield and up front! I'm really going off Keegan as of late, cannot see what he's been doing to deserve a start every game.
Title: Re: Oldham V Rovers
Post by: Chris Black come back on December 26, 2012, 03:42:06 pm
Both Keegan and Harper have advantages but they should never under any circumstances be played in the same team together. Clingan should always start alongside one of them.
Title: Re: Oldham V Rovers
Post by: DonnyBazR0ver on December 26, 2012, 03:43:19 pm
May be a way to go yet but signs not good. Nothing to change concerns that:-

Quinn - Not up to it
McCombe - Dodgy
Spurr - better at centre half
Harper - Invisible
Keegan - visible mainly for the wrong reasons
Paynter - also invisible
Bennett - Lost in a sea of green.

Title: Re: Oldham V Rovers
Post by: MachoMadness on December 26, 2012, 03:43:51 pm
I'll always say about Keegan his heart's in the right place so he does well against a team full of scrappers and cloggers. If you put him against a team with any kind of footballing ability whatsoever he gets shown up every time though.
Title: Re: Oldham V Rovers
Post by: Barmby Rover on December 26, 2012, 03:46:57 pm
At least Bennet has been trying to get forward, but there is no tackling midfielder who can also pass a ball, it leaves us open for quick attacks without any control from midfield.
Title: Re: Oldham V Rovers
Post by: Chris Black come back on December 26, 2012, 03:50:25 pm
Copps isn't going to be sprinting back 30 yards to get a tackle in but thank god we will finally have someone who can put their foot on the ball and pass to someone in red and white.

According to the BBC Rovers haven't had a shot on target yet. Amazing how we are managing to win! :)

PA stats as accurate as ever. Apparently we had minus 25% of the possession between the 37th and 44th minutes.
Title: Re: Oldham V Rovers
Post by: MachoMadness on December 26, 2012, 03:51:48 pm
Yeah, it really sounds like our usual gameplan is struggling simply because the centre of midfield is so plodding we can't get forward properly and invite too much pressure. Harper and/or Keegan should not be playing together if we have any other option.
Title: Re: Oldham V Rovers
Post by: DonnyBazR0ver on December 26, 2012, 03:53:54 pm
Like to see at least a double substitution at the break.

Syers for Harper...get some legs on.

Husband for McCombe...lower centre of gravity on a wet pitch and more likely to cause them problems going forward.

Shock horror, we put a bit of energy in the middle of the park and all of a sudden things improve! Syers has to start over Keegan/Harper now he's fit. Preferably drop Keegan as Harper has a bit more technical ability, which Syers still lacks.

Bugger, to say we're supposedly only near the top on luck (we're not, by the way), we're not having much of it today are we?

Very clever if deliberate and true (not sure of exact wording of laws on suspensions and if it is subtle enough to cover this sort of situation)

Edit: No it is simply stupid. I think after 1 January 10 yellows are needed for a suspension, i.e. no suspension for 5 yellows. So there was nothing to be gained.

Dutch. It'll be deliberate.  Players have been doing it for years. I remember Paul Barnes doing it in this very week of the 02/03 promotion season. Last few minutes against Leigh, he chased half the length of the field to give the ref an earful. Picked up his 5th yellow card and missed the FA trophy match a week later.

I'm amazed that the authorities don't clamp down on this.

Just edited my previous post to say that Hume has simply been stupid.

I believe from 1 January that 10 yellows are needed for a suspension, so there was nothing to be gained, and he is simply 1 yellow nearer the 10. Also should Saturday's game be postponed presumably he would miss the Blades match.

Anyway who cares - Brilliant result   :scarf: :scarf: :scarf: :scarf:
Title: Re: Oldham V Rovers
Post by: The Red Baron on December 26, 2012, 06:42:45 pm
Point of information - the card Hume picked up today was his 4th yellow of the season, not his 5th. So he would not be banned for the Preston game. I think the confusion stems from the fact that in the Oldham home game he was dismissed for two yellows. In such cases, the first yellow is wiped out.

Leading yellow cards after today's game as follows:

Keegan   8
Jones   6
Cotterill    5
Quinn   4
Hume   4
Brown   3
Syers   3
Bennett   3

So only Quinn is in danger of a ban for five yellows should he pick up on on Saturday. However, if any accumulate 10 before some time in April they will cop a two game ban.

Hume does seem to pick up some silly and needless bookings (ditto Cotterill) and DS should have a word about it.

No it is not a fluke.  We are far from the finished article and could have some better entertainment, with creative midfielders playing positively.  We are grinding out results and accumulating points with hard work, especially away from home.  And Woods is not as bad as folks make out, we're high in the table with 43 points halfway through the season, with Woods as 'keeper in every game.  He can't be that bad, can he?
