With the Rotherham game next week. Lets see who people feel the biggest rival is...
-
Our self we only need to fear our selves
-
Barnsley for me but only by a very short head from Rotherham.
-
Rotherham scunny then York/Lincoln/Mansfield/Grimsby since I have been supporting then then Barnsley and sheff clubs when in same div

It would seem people are not picking Barnsley because they are in a different league.
The question should have read. ‘Who are our biggest rivals based on all the local clubs being in the same division.’ The poll would I am sure be a very close call between Rotherham and Barnsley with Scunthorpe 3rd. As we are not in the same division as Barnsley the poll is distorted as they are not rivals this season.
-
Only really ever been rivals of Barnsley since we started playing against them in last 10 yearsor so before then they were just another local side but not really a rival
-
Always York or Lincoln
-
All depends on which side of town you're from. But I think we can all agree the Holy Trinity is made up of SCUNNY, Rovrum and Barnsley. ;)

Yes but we played against Barnsley in the 50’s 60’s 70’s on a regular basis for any one in their 50’s & 60’s + I would suggest Barnsley are the biggest rivals.
We have played Barnsley much more than Rotherham in the last 14 years so would be bigger rivals for the younger supporters. Thoughts anyone.
-
Reckon it's an age/era thing.
I was brought up on a diet of Barnsley, Barnsley and Barnsley so my choice is easy.
Scunthorpe is local to me but it just doesn't quite have the same feel.
Rotherham, who are they?

I agree Campsall, Barnsley shade it over Rotherham for me. We restarted our rivalry with Barnsley about 1964 whereas apart from the Sheffield County Cup league games against Rotherham didn't resume until about 1969.

But if you live in Haxey you are in Lincolnshire so you are a lot nearer Scunthorpe.
Doncaster is in S.Yorkshire so Barnsley and Rotherham are natural rivals.
Ask Scunthorpe fans and they will say Lincoln and Grimsby are bigger rivals to them than us.
-
Yep, and hull
-
In mileage terms. Town centre to town centre.
Rotherham 14 miles
Barnsley 16 miles
Scunthorpe 27 miles.
York City 40 miles
Lincoln City 42 miles
Bradford City 42 miles
Huddersfield 47 miles
IMO it is simply no contest is it. Choice of Rotherham or Barnsley
Other than Scunthorpe we have played them more often and Scunthorpe is not in Yorkshire and is twice the distance.
As we are have been in a lower leagues to both Sheffield clubs and Leeds apart from a few seasons I am discounting them as major rivals.
-
Hull 50 miles, past rivals but not in the same bracket as the top 3 on the list. I really enjoyed our visits to Hull City. Great atmosphere.
-
Barnsley and Rotherham wouldn’t say we were there’s. they’d say the 2 Sheffield clubs but neither of them care about them.
Sad thing is we live in a much bigger, better town and more populated town, but Barnsley and Rotherham have more fans and been more successful than us over the last 20 odd years I’ve been watching Rovers
-
I've said it before, and I'll say it again because it is inarguably true. Both our closest rivals, Rotherham and Barnsley, are towns that have got absolutely nothing going for them in comparison other than bragging rights over their football team. That is why they consider themselves too good to be our rivals, even when they are not.
Watching their local footy team is like friggin in the rigging....... There is f**k all else to do.
Sad, but true.

Rotherham have not been more successful Padge in the last 15 seasons. We have. FACT
They were in the 80’s and 90’s but other than that they have not.
-
It's Rotherham for me, always believed that and I've barely seen us play them having been a supporter for only two decades.
-
My era was the late 80's through 90's. I can only remember a handful of games against Rotherham, but there is no question in my heart or mind that they are our rivals.
Scunthorpe after that.
Then Leeds for me, but that's a fairly recent thing.
Got nothing against Barnsley really.
-
Rotherham no doubt. Horrible club, populated by web toed, 12 fingered inbreds living in a cesspit of a town. I take huge delight from beating them.

Those sort of comments quite frankly are not called for. How can we complain about Rotherham fans giving us verbal ...... if some of ours are as bad.
-
Me and a mate were thinking probably back in the early 90s after suffering so many derby defeats to Rotherscum about how football songs or the like generate and we were thinking how apt To be a Pilgrim is to Plymouth then decided to tweak it as follows....
Who would true valour see,
Let him come hither,
One here will constant be,
Come wind, come weather.
There's no discouragement
Shall make him once relent
His first avowed intent
To win at Rotherham....
I have only ever seen us win at Rotherham once in 1985. I hope I am able to sing this in a drunkern haze somewhere next Saturday. This is the true 'Cusack' derby.. there is no other like it for us Donny fans!
-
And it's a shame we didn't get to play then a few times when they were on their uppers in their temporary Sheffield home..
-
Sorry Campsall, it’s only a bit of fun isn’t it? Remember that? Anyway, I’ll be sure to run anything I post by you first in future. I wouldn’t want to suffer the wrath of your pomposity again.

I am not being pompous. I am just saying it’s no good moaning about insults being made about Doncaster Rovers or the town by a tiny minority, if you return it with the same about them.
All your doing is coming down to the same level as them. Ignore them, lets do our talking on the field of play and then we can hear a deafening silence from down the A630/M18

Our biggest rival has got to be the team we play next, so Rotherscum next Saturday and then Bury the week after.

For me at Edenthorpe it's Scunny geographically. I don't really hate, Scunny Rotherham or Barnsley particularly.
Hate Leeds with a passion, can't abide Mansfield and always makes me smile when Wendys lose!

What a load of shite this is. We don't have a rivalry with every team we play. By that logic, Arsenal were at one point our biggest rivals.

You can only play one team at a time, therefore the game you are playing next has to be the biggest rivalry, next week its Rotherscum followed by Bury. What the other local team are doing or who the other local teams are playing doesn't matter one jot if the Rovers are not playing them, therefore my logic is that the team you play next is your biggest rivalry because there is nothing the Rovers can do to influence those gameOur biggest rival has got to be the team we play next, so Rotherscum next Saturday and then Bury the week after.

Not shite at all, if the thread title was who was our biggest local rival then it would be the likes of Rotherham or Barnsley but its not so our biggest rivals has to be the next team we play.

Generational thing. Rovers gained a new generation of supporters after 2002. Rotherham gained a new generation of supporters after 2011. In the broad period from 1998 til today we have only played Rotherham 5 times competitively. You have to go back to the 80s to find when we last played them regularly. If we set an arbitrary cut-off point of being 7 years old to really comprehend what a 'rivalry' is then you need to be at least 27 (probably 4/5 years older in reality) to appreciate any of it. Because there's not been enough competitive games between the two.
Whereas since 1998, we've played Barnsley 19 times and Scunthorpe 22 times. For me these two are our rivals. Barnsley more so because I've personally had a few bad experiences with their fans and generally they are thick as shite, and miserable.

I think we have a very healthy and respectful rivalry with Barnsley. Real good banter with their supporters. Non of the trash that’s going about with the Rotherham fans.
This hate there is, is not healthy. I don’t like Rotherham and want to win so very much on Saturday but dislike and unequivocal hate are two different things. We are not Celtic and Rangers are we.
-
Well said Campsall!
I can't understand the hatred between two sets of fans when all we're really doing is supporting our local clubs.
I just hope, well obviously that we win and that it goe off without any violence.

Well said. May the best team win as long as it’s us. To be honest I will take a dodgy 95th min winner.
But seriously, oh I was being serious. You are red hot favourites with your current form, so all the pressure is on Rotherham. Hope it’s a great game as you said and no trouble before during or after the game.
-
1. Rotherham.
2. Barnsley.
3. Scunny.
-
I don't see us as red hot favorites. It's a local derby where form and league positions ho out the window and it doesn't help with some of our moronic fans giving it large on twitter and radio Sheffield.
A few years ago we played Sheffield united away 4 days before they played Hull in the FACup semis and as a result they field pretty much a team made up of reserves and juniors.
Our so called fans were all over the media saying how easy it was going to be and how many we'd get and......we lost 1-0 to the Blades chants of 'we beat you with kids'
I can see that happening again. But on the upside we did eventually get promoted via the playoffs that season
-
Despite us not playing Rotherham for a while, I always consider them our biggest rivals, though that is partly because I have had to misfortune to grow up surrounded by the fans in Swinton. Age and location are important though, I have no problem with Lincoln unlike some of our older supporters.
It does show a different mindset between our fans and theirs though, as they view the Sheffield clubs as rivals, and we honestly don't care.
-
26 years old
Despise Rotherham the most, followed by Wednesday, Wednesday is mainly due to the fans and their ego rather than my distaste for Rotherham which is towards the team, club, badge, ground and whole horrid town. Scunny solid third.
Lincoln not even on my radar if I’m being totally truthful, don’t mind Barnsley my grandad was a Barnsley fan, sheff u and Leeds I can take or leave unless we’re playing them. I do have a strong dislike for Grimsby but without sounding arrogant they’re a little bit irrelevant. If someone offered me win Saturday and stay up but don’t win another game all season, I’d take it.
-
Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds are probably due to Donny Owls and Donny Whites, nothing else. Sheff Utd was only really due to them thinking were jumped up when we started beating them, Other wise its a good relationship.
-
Agree with it being a generational thing, my first derby days were against Barnsley.
I’ve no particular dislike of any of the other South Yorkshire teams, and the deluded Sheffield fans do give us a laugh on Praise or Grumble.
I do reserve some animosity for Mansfield and those wan***s from Nottingham, not County mind.
-
Little Johnny: "Mum I want to be a Rotherham fan when I grow up."
Mum: "Make your mind up Johnny - you can't do both."
-
dingles for me, nearly got into an altercation with one of their nut cases at their ground, it would be a miracle if they shared one brain among the lot of them.
-
Leeds . Simply because I hate them
-
I voted for Rotherham because Rovers v Rotherham on Boxing Day 1969 was the first local derby I saw. We lost 2-1 to a last minute goal scored by a substitute called Lee Brogden. If anything is going to make you hate another club, that's a good way to do it.
Although in the mid-70s we rarely played Rotherham but had some tasty games with Barnsley.
-
Barnsley because when we played them at home, I had to walk an extra 5 mins from the middle of Scawsby to get a safe bus on York Road :chair:
-
I was counting up the times I've been on away grounds over the years and Scunthorpe was way ahead. Must be at least 15 times so them for me.
