Ben Whiteman
« on October 19, 2019, 07:22:20 pm by phil old leake »
Forgive me if this has been asked before

I’m not in a position to see matches or very few

It seems to me that every week even if we’ve been poor he gets rated highly

Are we at a point where we need to tie him down with a lucrative contract or risk losing him in January

If he’s playing so well championship clubs are bound to be watching and ready to pounce with their cheque books

He’s been a rock from the games that I’ve managed to get to. Great signing and definitely needs a decent contract sorting imo. I think he’s contracted for 2 years still?

He was outstanding today and seemed to get himself higher up the pitch on a regular basis.
His first touch was sublime and he barely made a bad pass.
Plenty of shots too, most of which were on target but blocked.

Have we ever given a 5 year contract out?

GB said in the DFP that contracts are being looked at, and Whiteman was mentioned by name too..

Watching Ben pass a football around is just a pleasure.

He’s our best player by an absolute mile and I’m dreading January

Much bigger clubs than us should be making big bids for him. He's an absolute steal for any club and should easily be higher end of Championship even a Premier League player in my opinion.

The through ball to Ennis that led to the 2nd goal was superb.
Ennis should have buried it though !!

He's a brilliant player, I think we are now at a stage where ability wise he could be compared to being as important as Richie Wellens was for us in his best years.
I have no doubt that Whiteman will go on to have a very good career, I just hope we can keep him for a bit longer.

He’s a great player and I’m a big fan. He’ll go along way but he’s made mistakes to this season. Him and sheaf work well together

If we can hang onto him after the January window, we’d better be playing Championship football next season or I can see us losing him.

He seems to genuinely love it here and being the Captain seems to matter to him. DM and GB were saying something about him making the Captain decision easy as he showed so much love for it and what they want to achieve.

It's a no-brainer, we have to get him tied down to a longer contract and convince him to stay and be the centre of this team going forward. He was the playmaker supreme today and has a big, big influence every week. McCann unlocking his potential at that deeper role has been a God-send for him and for us because he has consistently delivered since the start of last season. The club acted to sign him up permanently 18 months ago and I'm sure they're aware they need to do so again now.

As has been made public by GB in the DFP online reports very recently.  Specifically refers to Whiteman and also how the player feels about being here.

Think whiteman could be the next Jamie coppinger by staying with us on our way up and if we can keep Moore and the team ethic that we have right now then hopefully we can build a core of players that will stay even when the money comes calling.

Would be amazed if Whiteman is still with us in 1 year’s time let alone in 10 years.

Will there ever be another James Coppinger. That is the question.
It is more than rare for a player to stay at one club for over 15 years let alone make over 600 appearances.
We may not ever see it again.

I just look forward to seeing Copps play every week.
He always seems to do something amazing.

How much influence does he have on the players , do they need him to play well before they can play well ? If so , why is that ?

Fergie used take him off under the guise of saving his legs and moments later we’d concede a goal or loose a game . O’Driscoll , Dickov , Fergie , McCann and now Darren Moore have all needed this highly influential player who’s carved his career around setting up and breaking up attacks . Tirelessly running running through teams to get others on the ball . Worth the entry fee nearly every game !

Pretty much what I was saying at the game yesterday, apart from Copps he was way above any other player on the pitch. I was so relieved when he got up from that strong challenge in the first half and managed to shake off the injury.

If you have a look in car park 2 you'll probably  find the 2 Pompey players that Copps dummied still trying to get back in !!
