Question for the stattos..
« on February 12, 2019, 09:13:37 pm by ChrisBx »
How does McCann's first 6 or so months compare to that of our previous managers? Recent successful managers such as SOD, Saunders had seemingly slower or less successful starts but I was wondering how McCann compared overall.

Without any statistics to back it up, I’d say his record is pretty good compared to recent managers...

Ferguson - bright start but after 6 months we were in the midst of one of our worst runs in history and on the brink of relegation
Dickov - in the Championship, probably better than expected but in terms of wins not great
Saunders - firefighting in the Championship
SOD - boring football, lots of draws and not many goals whilst he was getting his ideas across
Penney - probably pretty comparable, from what I remember we finished the season strongly

Better than any recent manager. Penney might match him, but he'll be the only one in 50 years that does.

To put this season into perspective, our last 3 seasons in League One we finished on 56, 46 and 61 points after 46 games.

We currently have 53 points from 31 games.

The last two League One promotions saw us on 57 and 56 points after 31 games. We went into both final games of the season with a chance of automatic promotion. I don't think that's likely now unless we start picking up an average of just over 2 points a game and Barnsley or Luton implode, but it does show how well McCann has done.

Just over two months after being appointed Ferguson started that run - 17 games starting 9 January where we failed to win, encompassing 13 defeats and 4 draws with one run of 7 straight defeats.

More perspective.

O'Driscoll's 07/08 side, built over years, with bucketfulls of investment.

Sullivan
O'Connor
Roberts
Mills
Stock
Wellens
Green
Coppinger
Hayter
Price
Heffernan.
Etc, etc

They had 56 points after 31 games. Only 3 more than this side. And we thought they were the greatest creation for half a century.

Interesting that I think no loanees? Stock started briefly and maybe Sullivan but they were temporary before signing.

Wilks, Kane and Downing make up nearly third of outfield side and all borrowed. Strange SOD did not make more use of loans.

And Lewis.

O'Driscoll was literally from a different era.

He was from a time where you built owned solidity.

Now you borrow and build on that.

He was right then. This approach is right now.

From what I can see, in all competitions,

McCann and Penney have exactly the same record after 41 games in all competitions. W 21, D 9 and L 11.

Sean O'Driscoll had W 19, D 14 and L 8.

If you did it on a points basis, McCann and Penney would be on 72 pts and O'Driscoll on 71.

Also, I think there are only two players (Whiteman and Coppinger) in the current squad who have cost a fee.

Back in 07/08, we had paid decent money for
O'Connor
Stock
Wellens
Price
Hayter
Coppinger
Heffernan
Lockwood (I think)
And we'd soon pay a record fee for Mills (another loaned in 07/08).

Different times.

Marquis now has 18 league goals this season.

This is I think level with what Blundell got in 2003/4.

Not sure how far we have to go back to see someone who scored more than 18 league goals in a season?

Barnes got 26 (non) league goals in 2002/3 but who has more than 18 league goals?

I thought Glynn's were all league goals. Might be wrong.

Glyn Snodin. 1985/86. 19 goals from full back.

It was 1984-85 and Glynn had 18 league, 1 FA Cup.

So Marquis has equalled the our League record for the non-regionalised third tier and above.

Sorry TRB, of course it was 84/85.

Cusack was in charge by 85/86. I dont think we had 18 shots on goal under him.

I have just checked and he joined us in May 1968.
We won the fourth division in 68-69.
