Aye I remember those as a kid , no matter how poorly you were doing in the league the FA cup always put many more on the gate with the visitors always traveling in significant numbers .

FA cup final day in the 70's was looked forward to for weeks , up at 7am to start watching the build up .

Changing between BBC and ITV for the best bits , great days as a school kid .

The FA cup final was spectacular in those days because it was one of the few live games on TV. TV is saturated with football nowadays and Wembley has been diluted of importance because it is no longer the pinnacle of achievement to play there.

Second division Sunderland beating mighty Leeds at their peak in the 73 final .

You could hardly believe it as a kid , everyone was a Sunderland fan that day , I even watched it with my red n white bar scarf round my neck that I wore at Oakwell .

Couldn't wait to goad the Leeds fans at school on monday morning , we gave em hell for months afterwards .

My dad made me one of those when I was a kid.
I sold it for a tidy sum on ebay a couple of years ago.

I had one as a kid, made hell of a din.  Haven't seen them for decades but saw a guy (yes an adult) in the East Stand last Saturday with one but it didn't look home made.

Making a football rattle was a popular project in woodwork at school.

Woodbines
  in packs of five !

You could buy them loose in Sneaps on Woodlands shops back in the day.  Not that I did mind, Licorice and Violet pills were my weakness back then.

I had a WW2 Air raid precaution wooden rattle as a kid emblazoned with red and white stripes and the rovers in large letters. It made a hell of a din and took a real effort to get it revolving. I got mugged outside Oakwell at an away game and it was forceably removed from me. I’ve despised Barnsley ever since !

I still have mine, big fecker painted in Rovers colours with a double clicker what me dad made, couldn't lift it let alone 'rattle' it!
