Mason

I thought he did really well with the hand he was dealt. He is not a natural full back he needs a free running wing/wing back role. Caught out so much in the first half, could again be a scapegoat for some on here, but for goodness recognise he is often, in my very humble opinion, out of position?

DF must really rate him as he trusts him to play out of position when required.
I understand that he was excellent again in the second half in his RB role.

Hound he was good in the second half, and probably played as well going forward in the second half as he has all the time he has been with us.

I believe DF has been unfair on Mason and he should be looking to acquire a proper left back on loan until the end of this season. However, with Butler now potentially out for some time, we need strengthening in the centre, so a cb who could play left back would be my choice.

Mason can play centre back if we need him.

Or just play him in a position he's actually doing well in and not ruin him by using him here there and everywhere.

I'm not saying he's on the same level as Jimmy O'Connor but moving him all over the shop ruined him. Mason was far from convincing at right back initially but he's grown into it. Why stop that?

Isn't Garratt a proper left back?

He does for DF what Alcock must have done for him over the last decade in his Peterborough days .He is willing to play anywhere ! Mason is a natural right footer but has been played so often on the left that his left foot ( clearances with ) has strengthened but he is disadvantaged when he has to block the right wing crosses or rather tackle with his left side to prevent them .
His attitude and character is first class !

Yes. Which makes you wonder how highly Ferguson actually thinks of him if he'd rather play someone who's clearly not suitable for the position ahead of him.

Garratt is young and developing, Fergie knows he can't burn him out playing him every week.

I don't agree mason is clearly not suitable at left back. He's had more good games than poor ones in that position.

Exactly. Pleased someone else thinks so. Thought I was going doolally !!!
I said in the summer he wasn’t going to make it at this level but I now think given the opportunity think he will.
Assuming Andrew makes a full recovery then he will only be an understudy again.
