I agree an option to extend is how it should be but it's not signing players on longer term contracts is it, like we were told it will be..
At the minute we have a load of players potentially leaving in the summer, which is what the club wanted to "move away from"

He will get a guaranteed extra year if he plays so many games. It's a pathetic contract to give out in my opinion. There will be an option for him to be able to walk away after a year in sure.

It's the kind of contract you give to someone who's likely to be no good.

No, if he does well which leads to him playing x games his contract is automatically extended.

(but yes it does seem a bit of an odd length and those kind of deals are normally for pros at the end of the career as we had a similar contract for Jason Price towards the end of his time here)

We simply can't afford to get stuck with substandard/injury prone players on long term contracts, even if it means losing out on a big payday every now and then.
The risks outweigh the rewards in most cases.

With restricted finances and (more importantly) increased player/agent power, free transfers, one year contracts and the extensive use of loans are the norm in lower league football.

For clubs at this level, 2+ year contracts seem to be reserved for players costing a transfer fee, or for promising future prospects. Of course there will also be players who will demand the extra security a longer contract provides, just as there will always be those unwilling to commit beyond a season.

I think we need to get used to seeing the vast majority of the squad changing every season for the foreseeable future.

I presume there are many factors in it not being a 3 year, that may be the club or player / agent don't want to be tied to 3 years.

The club in negotiations will not always get their own way, even if they want 3 years.

How about this reason why he hasn't got a 3 year deal..........he's played 23 league games in the last 3 seasons and missed a fair chunk through injury.
Now who was the last player we gave a 3 year deal to? And how many games did he play last season?...............................
