Since it was announced that the Aussies would w
Not be buying 12 Diesel Electric Subs from France last week and are buying US and British instead they have cancelled a visi of the French navy and an Army band to celebrate their part in the American revolution and they have also recalled their Ambassadors from The US and OZ , they have dismissed our part in the 'Conspiracy ' stating that the UK is merely a Third Wheel!.
Will Jimmy Kranky be asking for froggy help in her Jitjockery and plans for an independent Scotland.

France. Where 10% of our electricity supply is due to come from and who are building a nuclear power station for us.

That France we have fallen out with - hilarious - I should start stocking up on candles now...

Almost from the off the French deal wasn't working out.

The Australians really wanted nuclear boats and went with the French diesel option because it might be converted. Costs ballooned, deadlines were missed and most crucially promised Australian jobs weren't materialising.

Then the Americans rocked up, looking for a strategic partner in the region and offering a better product. The UK just helped grease the wheels. A minor partner.

Well yes.

But aren't the Australians also getting uneasy about China's growing military?

To be honest it's not difficult to see why the UK is involved in this too.

Scared of losing trade with China has been the dominant factor, in our 'view from the couch' we have been wondering why the government has been deliberately poking the bear for the last 18 months without first sorting alternative markets, now we know why. The anti-Chinese rhetoric has been to ensure the Australian public would accept the nuclear option and bless em' they're not making a squeak about it.

extra: I should add that there is an election due early next year and the government have shit the bed over the bush fires and covid so this is a very handy 'look over here' moment.

Hasn't China stopped importing Australian coal recently?

China is reducing imports where it can develop it's own and local markets.

Only a few years ago Victoria (labor) the second most populous state here had signed a 'belt and road' trade agreement with them.

Australia's defence procurement is the pits, there is almost always a problem with whatever is contracted.

Have a look at this Don

https://independentaustralia.net/politics/politics-display/submarine-fiasco-the-latest-in-a-long-list-of-coalition-military-failures,15536

Added:

And the conversation that the Australian public are not getting is whether we want or should have nuclear power in the country at all full stop.

This is due to the duopoly with barely a fag paper's difference between labor and the conservatives, especially where national security climate change and refugees are concerned.

I like this, most who back electric cars to save the planet will put diesel engines, and big ones at that into subs.

You get in instant personal payback when you Ditch a Diesel as you stop poisoning yourself, and family etc, climate change reduction will be a longer term benefit.

Well Syd, diesel is the future for generating power in this country in the near future if they want to keep the lights on by the looks of it.
It looks like the big Diesel generators on standbye they have stashed away for such an emergency in such places as Trumpfleet are going to be needed

Selby, I'm just pointing out the good reasons to ditch it, there are around 50,000 container ship travelling around the world too plus all the cruise ships. If you have travelled along the Nile you would see the black plume hovering above it the whole way.

The world has to change, there is no choice.

Syd, and I am just pointing out that the Government have loads of diesel generators on sites throughout the country as a stand bye for a major to generate power in the case of major power failures.
The one at Trumpfleet near Askern has been there years with others dotted around the country mostly hidden by being landscaped.
I agree they will cause pollution, but obviously an evil necessity in the view of those pushing a green agenda when they know public opinion will turn against them if they can't watch Corra.

Standing batteries may be able to cover a lot of the power failures if the outages are short, the first 'big' battery in Adelaide paid for itself in quick time.

''The $200 million “Big Battery”, installed in South Australia in 2017 by Elon Musk’s Tesla company, has almost paid for itself, saving consumers around $116 million in higher power costs in 2019, a study by engineering and project management firm Aurecon has concluded''

I see that EU - Australia trade talks have been delayed....... the French are still not very happy after their submarine deal was blown out of the water (pun intended) and are dragging the EU into it.

Who wouldn't feel a bit miffed MM, after all the french have nuclear subs which Oz rejected as the electorate wouldn't accept it, they were forced to redesign to them to run diesel electric a huge project and a large part of the project was to be manufactured here.

So the Oz gov has spent the last 18 months poking the China bear over sovereignty and interference in Oz politics, all well and good except no one could understand why they didn't sort out new markets for our trade first. All this to prime the very anti nuclear Oz public for this. There is zero nuclear capability in anything but medicine here and the right side of politics has always wanted it probably due to uranium deposits, so a whole industry would have to be designed and built for the maintenance of these subs which won't arrive for twenty years. And because of the new China 'threat' the public hasn't questioned it, nor has labor. No mention of any build work to be done here either. I can see why the french are pissed.

Much of this thread seems to be in the same vein as this bellend Tory ex-MEP.

What seems to matter for many people is not us getting a good outcome, it's others losing.

https://mobile.twitter.com/LanceForman/status/1443473078156242947

This is the standard of person that the Tory party used to send to Strasbourg to represent us. His main aim being not to strengthen Britain, but to weaken the EU.

Are we leaving the world in a better place ..............

The French whom are not innocents in wheeling and dealing are fuming over Oz reneging on a supply contract, leaving the untrustworthy Oz government to deal with the British and the US governments, neither of which cover themselves in glory at regular intervals.
