We have all sang his praises in regards to doing the basics of defending his goal but, how much has this guy improved his technical ability? I remember his performance away at Fleetwood on boxing day 2018 and was papping it everytime the ball went near him. He and Joe Wright are huge for this team.

Can’t believe it’s the same player. He’s now in the Corporals mold? Fantastic Cb .

i believe these two are growing into a formidable pair, they complement each other well and have a decent touch on the ball, i think a massive assist for them is having full backs who have great engines to get up and down but also cover the middle, this unit can only get better.

Except he's not indestructible, nor does he have the power to score.

He has been excellent from the start and got better. And he can actually play.

I think the pair were developing anyway, but DM has accelerated that.

Been unlucky with injuries Joe Wright hopefully this is his season. If we go up this season we have players that can make the transition into the Championship

Come a long way from needlessly getting too tight to non-league strikers when 5-0 up.

Less than two years...wow

What was up with Marquis in that clip?
After he scored, he looked like he'd lost a tenner, and found a quid, got a right mardy arse face on him, did somebody upset him?

He'd got the idea that fans were getting on his back, as some were.

Yeah he'd apparently had some grief from fans in that area. With it being a largely empty stadium he'd obviously heard what was said and was able to give a bit back when he scored.

Despite his record for us it was surprising how many fans did get on his case.

Some fans tend to look at goals scored and chances missed and not much else. Marquis was like Blundell in that he was a 20-goal striker who wasn't a natural finisher, but his strength was having the brains and the commitment to get into good positions time and time again. Some might see him miss a sitter but ignore the 50-yard gut-busting run he made, that no other player on our team could make, to get into that position in the first place.

Exactly.  I remember after he headed in that third goal in the Charlton play off match that someone said they could have scored that one.
I doubt though whether they could have laid the ball off on halfway and ran fifty yards and escaped his marker first.

Ran 50 yards after running his blood to water all game, and all season.

John was an absolute treasure & some of our fans are clueless.

It's appropriate that both Tom and JM are mentioned in the same thread, because some of the criticism of both of them on here in the past was f*cking disgraceful.

Im not a Marquis fan IMHO. Other than the League 2 season he went on a 10 game barren run for the next 2 seasons after that. Lost count of how many pens he missed along the way, hardly ever assisted any goals either. For a number 9 who played every minute of every game when fit his number should have been much better if he was THAT good. And its no coincidence that the team have not really missed him since he has been gone and hardly pulled trees up at Portsmouth.

25 goals in his last season with us, helped us be a top six League One team.

So I think your assessment of John Marquis is rather unfair, personally.

Would you have Marquis back here? In my opinion he was 1 of the best strikers we've ever had, however with him up top we were very 1 dimensional at times and relied heavily on his goal scoring. This season everyone is weighing in with goals hopefully this will continue
