How Dickov compares
« on April 29, 2014, 08:30:07 am by big fat yorkshire pudding »
Thought it interesting to see how he stacks up with previous managers;

Interestingly Saunders had the same win % at Wolves last season as Dickov has had with us.  SOD's record at Bristol City was also 25%.

47 points is the most we can get this season.  Only the 36 in our last season at this level has been worst since the return to the football league.

Unless we score 3 goals this Saturday it will also be our lowest scoring season at any level in at least the last 11 years.  However, defensively we are slightly improved on our last two seasons at this level.  Only once in recent times has the goal difference been worst - I'm talking since 2000 as looking back further would take more than the 5 mins I have.

Manager   Won   Drawn   Lost   Percentage
Dickov   12   11   25   25%
Flynn   10   4   6   50%
Saunders   26   18   29   36%
SOD   97   72   99   36%
Penney   114   62   65   47%

Obviously lots of variables but in reality the stats are not massively impressive.  We're not comparing like for like either so they are just what they are.

Dickov is only manager where his stats are all in the championship. So only real comparison that should be done is comparing all their records at this level.
Otherwise it doesn't mean anything

Yep, you can make stats support most arguments, I think using league one stats against championship ones loses much of the credibility.

I agree, but that doesn't make pretty reading for Dickov either. He'd stack up worse than O'Driscoll and about the same as Saunders.

Records in the Championship

O'Driscoll
P145 W 43 D38 L64 Pts/game 1.15

Saunders
P39 W8 D11 L20 PPG 0.90

Dickov
P45 W11 D11 L23 PPG 0.98

I wouldn't set a great deal of store by these though. There are always circumstances.

O'Driscoll is the only one of those managers to have had a large amount of time to build a squad and style before he hit the ground in the Championship. But then again he's the only one to have to re-build a squad and style on the hoof after the best players were stripped out of it by rivals.

You can make what you want of it.

EDIT: That's Saunders' & O'Driscoll's record with us. For the record, here are their performances when you factor in their time at Wolves and Forest.

O'Driscoll
P169 W52 D47 L70 Pts/game 1.20

Saunders
P59 W13 D16 L30 PPG 0.93

It's a pointless comparison though. Too many variables not accounted for to make any sense out of it.

Not sure he would... He'd be very close to sod, and better than Saunders

Saunders was given a chance when most wanted him gone and look what happened. You'd think people would learn from this...

They are raw stats and it's clear they are just raw stats. The lack of goals is the stat that stood out most.  Whatever league you're in his stats aren't great I don't think.

all different individuals different contexts ... in our current situation I would back Dickov against any of those other recent incumbents and if we go down then as long as we can afford to match his budgetary requirements I would keep him in the hope that the excellent recruitment record continue
